COMPULSORY UNIONISM
To The Editor
Sir You published a letter of mine in your columns the other day asking a few questions about the administration of unions and union funds, but apparently no one is inclined to give the information I ask. It may be that my letter was not clear; but one of the points I wish to be enlightened on is, does any df the money subscribed by us to the union under compulsion go to help the Labour Party? I for one am not a Labourite and there are thousands in the same box as I am. Why should we be compelled to pay money to assist a political party we would wish to see at the bottom of the sea? Next, did the employees of the various trades have any say in the appointment of their secretaries or did the secretaries just come into existence«and the unions follow? Who arranges the salaries of the secretaries and what are they? These appear to me to be all quite fair questions and no one should be averse to making replies to them. The general public is entitled to know and possibly you can give me some enlightenment in the matter. —Yours, etc., DRAPERY. June 17, 1938.
