The view that the carrying capacity of the land from Eskdale to Tutira (Hawke’s Bay) will be reduced by from 10 to 15 per cent, as a result of numerous slips which took place during the recent flood is expressed by Mr F. R. Burnley, Commissioner of Crown Lands (Napier). Mi- Burnley stated that a survey carried out indicated that many of the higher hills which formerly carried mixed pasture will be razor-back spurs without vegetation. Little of the material from the slips had consolidated in the gullies, the greater portion having been carried into the valleys by the terrific force of the flood.
