Drainage is one of the most important items in farm management, especially in a district partial to flooding, and is a practice which could undoubtedly receive much more attention than it does at present. With recent flooding such as Hawke’s Bay has received during the past few weeks, the need has become much in evidence and the work is forced on the farmer. Much more fortunate is the man who has his farm drained ready for such an emergency. Following the successful results obtained by two Auckland grain merchants who undertook an experiment with a modified form of the decimal system of weights in selling grain by the 1001 b instead of by the bushel, the Auckland Grain and Seed Merchants’ Association has decided to adopt this method as the basis of quoting and invoicing all grain and produce. In the meantime, however, it is not proposed to include potatoes, chaff, onions or meatmeal in the new system of quotation.
