LIABILITY DENIED BY COUNTY
PAYMENTS CLAIMED BY CITY COUNCIL
Denials of liability by the Southland County Council for the cost of maintenance of Stead street and street lighting on the North road to Waikiwi were reported to the Invercargill City Council last night by the town clerk (Mr W. F. Sturman). . “The County Council has declined to pay our account for £2l for lighting the North road for the year ended March 31 on the grounds that it is now part of the Invercargill-Queenstown main highway, vested in the Main Highways Board as from December 3, 1936. I have submitted the account to the board with the request for. prompt payment for the service which this council is giving,” stated the town clerk.
Another report stated: “In a letter dated April 11, the county clerk (Mr H. C. Gimblett) advises that his council agrees to pay an invoice for £ll 19/5 for half the cost of the maintenance of the Stead street bridge, but declines to recognize any liability for an account for £34 15/- for half the cost of the maintenance of Stead street. There is now more than £2OO owing by the county for maintenance work on Stead street.”
