MR RICHARD CAVILL (Received May 2, 9.50 p.m.) SYDNEY, May 2. The death occurred of Mr Richard Cavill, a member of the world’s bestknown swimming family. _He won every Australian championship in the late nineties. His best mile was 21min 14sec at Wanganui. The death occurred yesterday morning in the Oamaru hospital of Mr Robert Buchanan Irvine, who for 30 years, till he retired a few months ago, managed the local branch of Dalgety and Company. For over a year he had be'&i suffering from illness. He left home about 6.30 on Saturday night, but as he had not returned by 9.30 a search was instituted and he was found at the Columba lawn . tennis courts with a gun-shot wound in the head and a rifle alongside. He was removed to hospital and died four hours later. > Mr Irvine was widely known and highly respected both by the farming community and fellow citizens. The death has occurred of Edward Collins Jack, aged 69, a well-known company secretary and commercial agent of Wellington since 1906. He was engaged in secretarial work, beginning as Dominion secretary of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, a position he held until 1921. From 1915 to 1922, he was secretary of the New Zealand Council of Agriculture. He was also on the executive of the Wellington Town-Planning Association and for more than 12 years was editor and nianager of The Farmers’ Union Advocate, a position he held at the time of his death. Mr Jack held several secretarial positions, including those of the Dominion Farmers’ Institute and New Zealand Forestry League, positions he held since 1916 and 1915 respectively. Mr Jack spoke both Maori and Esperanto fluently and was very interested in the work of the Esperanto Club.
