The appointment of Mr R. T. Meredith, a member of the Southland Rugby Union, and Mrs R. S. Mclnnes, formerly of Invercargill, to the National Council of Physical Welfare and Recreation was referred to by members of the Southland Rugby Union last evening, and it was decided to send them letters of congratulation. Archdeacon J. A. Lush is at present at Lumsden, having exchanged pulpits for a week with the Pev. H. Fallows.
Mr W. M. Cole, formerly assistant District Traffic Manager of Railways at Dunedin, assumed control of the Southland district yesterday following the retirement of Mr J. A. Lindsay on Saturday. Mr C. E. Long, manager of the Milford track and hostel, is staying at the Railway Hotel. He expects to leave for Milford Sound today. The Rev. D. C. Herron, of Knox Presbyterian Church, Dunedin, who conducted the services at First Presbyterian Church, Invercargill, on Sunday, returned to Dunedin by the express yesterday afternoon. The death of Mr S. F. Wilson, a former president of the New Zealand Rugby Union and a member for many years of the Canterbury Rugby Union was referred to by Mr A. J. Geddes, at the meeting of the Southland Rugby Union last evening. It was decided to send a message of sympathy to Mrs Wilson. The Rev. J. A. Thomson returned to Invercargill from Dunedin yesterday.
Mr T. Hamilton, Winton, will leave by the express this morning for Christchurch to attend the annual conference of wheat growers. The executive council of the New Zealand Institute of Horticulture awarded the Cockayne gold medal to Mr F. J. E. Jollie, of New Plymouth, as the best student, in the opinion of the examining board, in its diploma examination for 1937. Mr Jollie completed the diploma examination shortly after his return from the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, where he underwent further training.—Press Association.
