BOROUGH COUNCIL

CENTENNIAL MEMORIAL FOR CENTRAL OTAGO The monthly meeting of the Queenstown Borough Council was attended by the Mayor (Mr W. H. Overton) and Crs Aburn, Anderson, Miller, Schieb, Fix and Flahive. An application by A. Morgan to have water laid on to his property in Suburb street was granted. The hon. secretary, Otago Provincial Centennial Council, advised that arrangements had been made by Mr J. Bennetts for a meeting to be held in Clyde on May '2l for the purpose of discussing the form of the Centennial Memorial for Central Otago. The Commissioner of Transport wrote regarding the special poster to be produced appealing to road users to take greater care, and asking if the council would advise as soon as possible the number of posters it would be prepared to take. It was decided to take half-a-dozen posters and 200 road safety stickers. . E Knowles wrote asking the council to improve the street lighting in Hallenstein street. This matter was referred to the Lighting Committee with power to act. The same writer also asked the council to repair the stop cock off the main so that a burst lead pipe could be repaired. It was decided that the matter be attended to. The Rovers Basketball Club wrote asking for the use of the Garrison Hall every Tuesday; also on one Friday in each month, the date to be advised as required.—Granted. The Otago Clerical Workers’ Industrial Union of - Workers wrote stating that while it was at all times desirous of working in co-operation with the council in any matters concerning the Local Bodies Clerical Workers’ Award the action of the council gave it no option but to hand the matter over to the Department of Labour to take action.—Received. The Queenstown Municipal Brass Band wrote asking whether it was liable for accounts for the Queenstown Brass Band and which had been paid by the secretary of the band out of his own pocket at a time when the band had no funds. It was decided to advise that the council considered the band liable. Accounts amounting to £303 14/were passed for payment. The council decided to put an extra street light opposite the new post office. At the close of the meeting the Mayor stated that he wished to thank councillors for the manner in which they had co-operated with him. He also wished to thank the borough staff, both office and outside, for their attention to duties. The councillors and town clerk replied. SNOW ON REMARKABLES After a long spell of perfect autumn weather the first snow of the season has made its appearance on the Remarkables. SOCIAL Miss Eve Curtis will leave today on an extended holiday to Sydney and Melbourne. Miss M. Harris is visiting Queenstown as the guest of Mrs R. Robins. Mrs A. Inglis, accompanied by her small daughter, left last week to take up residence in Invercargill. BADMINTON At the annual meeting of the Queenstown Badminton Club Mr A. F. Griffen presided over a fair attendance of members. On the year’s working the balancesheet showed receipts amounting to £27/15/10 and expenditure amounting to £23 4J2, leaving a credit' balance of £4 10/8. The report stated that the past year had been quite successful, the club playing five outside friendly matches and winning three and losing two. A tournament had also been held in which the dub members had shown great interest and enthusiasm. The report was adopted. The election of office-bearers resulted as follows: President, Mr A. F. Griffen (re-elected); vice-presidents, Messrs C. M. Inglis, A. Farrant and G. Cockburn and Mrs Pettersson; secretary and treasurer, Mrs C. M. Inglis; executive committee, Messrs J. Hall, R. Robertson, W. Stewart; women’s committee, Misses Farrant, D. Harris and Mrs Landrebe; club captain, Mr A. Farrant. The official opening night was arranged for May 2. The question of affiliation with the Southland Badminton Association was left in the hands of the committee. Subscriptions were fixed as follows: Men, 25/-; women, £l—reducible by 5/- in each case if paid before July 1. Six new members were nominated for membership.
