GORE

BOROUGH COUNCIL FINAL MEETING BEFORE ELECTIONS The final meeting of the Gore Borough Council before the municipal elections was held last evening when there were present: The Mayor (Mr A. T. Newman), and Councillors J. A. Wright, J. A. Baldey, R. L. Reid, N. Robson, T. Sim. A. McLachlan, J. A. S. Aitken, R. S. Green and J. C. Ray. Mr A. Tyndall, the Director of Housing Construction, wrote stating that the land for housing, the Gore saleyards property, would not be taken by the department until May 25. The secretary -of the Southland Progress League (Mr J. S. Dick) wrote about the Government Tourist Department’s advertisement, thanking, the council for drawing the league’s attention to the matter. The executive had fully concurred with the council s views and had written to the General Manager of the Department of Tourist and Publicity (Wellington) pointing out the anomaly and suggesting that additional places for the South Island be featured selected from such resorts as Stewart Island, Queenstown, Lake Te Anau, Hanmer, Mount Cook, or Franz Josef glacier. , ir i On the recommendation of the Works Committee it was decided that the Caledonian ground be granted to the Eastern Suthland Rugby Football SubUnion for a playing area, during the pleasure of the council. CONDITION OF TALBOT STREET The grading and gravelling of Talbot street, East Gore, was discussed when a recommendation of the Works Committee that the Southland County Council be notified to go on with the grading of the street and that the matter of gravelling be left to the incoming council, was before the meeting. Cr R. L. Reid said that he considered the gravelling should be carried out immediately. The road was practically impassable in the winter and if it were gravelled at the present time it would benefit a number of people. The residents often used the road and business vans were frequently on it, proceeding to McNab. In the winter these vans could not get through and they had to turn back and go round via the. main road. It would not be an expensive matter to have the road gravelled as the County Council had offered to pay half the cost. He moved that the recommendation be adopted and that the council call for tenders for gravelling the road. Cr N. Robson seconded the motion and stated that the residents in Talbot street had been promised the road about a year ago. Cr R. S. Green moved as an amendment that the recommendation be adopted as it stood. The Works Committee had decided to recommend .hat the matter ot gravelling be left to the incoming council and he was prepared to stand by the committee’s decision. Councillor T. Sim seconded the amendment.

The Mayor said that the County Council had agreed to contribute half the cost of grading and gravelling the road. It was a matter of about 16 chains and he certainly would like to see the work carried out eventually. The road was impassable in the winter. Cr J. A. S. Aitken remarked that it would be unwise to grade the road unless it were gravelled immediately afterwards.

After some discussion the amendment was lost, the motion being carried on a show of hands,.

MR AND MRS W. GEE HONOURED COMPLIMENTARY SOCIAL AT GORE A complimentary social was given to Mr and Mrs Walter Gee by district clients of Messrs J. E. Watson and Company, Limited, and friends at Gore last week. There was a big attendance and Mr W. G. Mac Kay was chairman. Mr Mac Kay said that the name of Gee was well known, not only in Eastern Southland, but throughout Southland. Mr Gee had just completed more than 50 years’ service with the well-known commercial firm of J. E. Watson and Company and during that time he had always been the soul of honesty and integrity. His was a record of which any man could be justly proud. Mr Mac Kay also praised Mrs Gee’s qualities. The chairman presented Mr Gee with a wallet of notes, stating that he wished it to be accepted as an appreciation of what he and his wife had done for the community. Messrs D. Bruce, G. Bishop, Henry Smith, J. C. Dickson, A. McQueen, W. D. Shelton, J. W. Byars, T. Pollock, W. Miller and Mrs A. Johnston also spoke. In reply, Mr Gee said that he appreciated the kind remarks made about his wife and himself and thanked those present for their presentation. He had come to Southland with his parents 64 years ago and during his stay in the district he had made many friends. His people had settled at Riversdale, which in the early days had been looked upon as the capital of Southland. Mr Gee extended best wishes to Mr G. Bishop, who had succeeded him as manager of the firm. During the evening, items were given by Messrs R. L. Stevenson, N. D. Shelton, H. H. Brown, and Mrs J. Cooper. Miss Mary Johnston acted as accompaniste. i WOMEN’S HOCKEY The Eastern Southland women’s hockey competition matches were continued on Saturday in cold but dry weather. On Hockey Park, Gore, Hokonui A beat Mataura B by seven goals to one. The Hokonui team was much more experienced and outplayed the visiting team in every department of the game. For the winners M. Nicol (2), M. Sherriff (4) and W. Mason scored. At Wyndham the home club’s A team scored an easy win over Waikaka by eight goals to nil. The winning team had much the better of the play in the first half and ran up a lead of seven goals to nil. A splendid exhibition was given by J. Browning in Waikaka’s goal in the second half and Wyndham was able to score only one further goal, Miss Browning saving time and again. NO BUILDING PERMITS Although there is considerable activity in the building trade at Gore no building permits were issued in the town during April. This is the first occasion for many months that such a position has occurred. Last April five permits valued at £5930 were issued, and in 1936 permits totalling £2460 were issued.
