SOUTHERN DISTRICT COMPETITION
SEAWARD DOWNS BEATEN BY WAIMAHAKA Conditions were very wintry for the opening of the Rugby football season in the Southern District Sub-Union’s competition. A strong south-west wind blew throughout the afternoon, making conditions very unpleasant. In a hard fought game at Waimahaka, the home team had a narrow win over Seaward Downs by three points to nil. The teams were:—
Waimahaka (green and white).—J. Valli (2), A. Heazlemore, H. Moir, Hoffman, Gray, W. Valli, G. Holmes,
Thompson, B. Scott, S. Bennison, Livingstone, Mclntosh, T. Valli, L. Crighton. Seaward Downs (maroon). —Hawke, T. Blackmore, B. Bates, J. Hardy, J. McCall, L. Moyles, J. Blackmore, J. Palmer, H. Morton, M. Brosnahan, D. Weir, G. Heath, J. McCleary, W. Weir, B. Baxter. . Losing the toss, Waimahaka kicked off against the wind and carried play into Seaward Downs territory. J. Blackmore relieved with a good kick through and followed up fast, but a knock-on spoilt the chance. From the scrum a force-down resulted. From the drop-out play went to Seaward Downs line where D. Weir forced. Seaward Downs attacked from the drop-out but a force-down resulted. Good forward play by the home team kept Seaward Downs on the defence. Heazlemore and Hoffman were prominent, but Seaward Downs carried over and forced. From a scrum Seaward Downs hooked and Morton kicked to half-way, but L. Crighton, with a good rim, took play to the 25 again. In the second half, playing against the wind, Seaward Downs took play to the line with bustling tactics, _ but a force-down resulted from a big kick. Good kicking by Waimahaka put them on attack. From a line-out the ball went to J. Hardy, who ran through to Waimahaka territory. However, the home team’s forwards took play to the line where a force-down from a scrum saved Seaward Downs. Near time B. Scott secured from a scrum and scored after a good run. W. Valli’s kick missed. Waimahaka 3, Seaward Downs 0. Time was called shortly afterwards with Waimahaka still attacking. The final score was Waimahaka 3, Seaward Downs 0. Mr J. Stirling was the referee. NEW SOUTH WALES BEATS QUEENSLAND RETURN MATCH AT BRISBANE BRISBANE, May 2. In an interstate Rugby return match, New South Wales beat Queensland by 11 points to 9. At half-time New South Wales led by 8 points to 3.
