The National Rifle Association meeting was started at Trentham this morn_ ing In dull and threatening weather There was no rain, however and in the afternoon the sun broke through an improved the visibility. A rear fishtail wind caused many breakdowns and its trickiness remained all day. As an indication of its vageries, F. H. James, of Napier, who was in the New Zealand team, and is one of the best shots in-the Dominion, made 67 out oi in the opening match at 300 and 500 yards, but broke badly at the 600 yards, making only 25 out of the possible 35 The opening match was won by 1. Goodall, of Wellington, who shot brilliantly for 103 out of the possible 105. He made the possible at each of the two first ranges, and at 600 yards made 33 with six bulls-eyes and a magpie 3. The best Southland score was made by A. R. Wills, who wanted a buHs-eye for his last shot to score 99, but the wind beat him into a magpie, making his score 97. Wall made 96, Munro and Falconer 94 each, Webb 93, Murray and McChesney 92 each, Ford, Collie and Gaudion 91 each, McWilliams, Tansley, Wishart, Dickie and Burnett 90 each, Clark 89, Henderson 87, Wilson Bb, Cunningham 83 and Barclay 83. The prize list is not out yet, but Wills and Wall are sure to be in. numerous. The match was won by R. Congreve (Wellington) with the bril-, liant score of 99 out of the possible 100. One of the South Africans was close up with 97. The best Southland score was made by Tansley, who shot well under the conditions for 95. Ford made 93, Wishart and Gaudion 92 each, Wall 91, Wilson, Munro and Falconer 90 each, Wills 89, Clark and Burnett 88 each, McWilliams, Collie and Henderson 87 each, Murray 86, Dickie 85, Cunningham 84 and McChesney 81. The service matches will be fired tomorrow and the championship matches will be continued on Monday morning.
