AN OUTSTANDING RECORD
NORTHEND’S LIST OF SUCCESSES The Northend Club is one of the oldest established clubs in Southland, but it is doubtful if ever before its members have gained so many successes as they have in competition play this season. In tournament play and in championships Northend players have gained eight firsts, five seconds and two thirds. These successes include two of the most important events decided by the Southland bowling centre —the shield rink championship and the champion-of-champions pairs—and some of the more important tournaments conducted during the season. Twenty or 30 years ago Northend was looked upon as the strongest club in Southland, and although it won the rink championship only once in 27 years, its -record of success in interclub competitions and tournament play was an admirable one. Rarely a season went past without Northend winning a
banner or trophy of some description. In recent years, however, the transition stage which visits every club at some time or other has made its presence strongly felt in the club, and the inevitable lean period followed. New and young members have arrested this situation. They have made wonderful strides in the short time of three or four years ana today are numbered among the leading players of the province. Their enthusiasm and keeness for tournament play was shown in the entries for centre and club tournaments. It is not unusual to find three or four Northend rinks, sometimes more, entered at tournaments. At Winton a fortnight ago there were four Northend rinks in a field of 18 rinks; at Hokonui today there will be four, and at the New Zealand tournament at Dunedin in January Northend was represented by four rinks, the largest number from any club outside Dunedin clubs. RECORD OF SUCCESSES Following is the list of events won this season by the club:— SHIELD RINK CHAMPIONSHIP (S. C. K. Smith, J. Ure, D. J. Wesney, A. V. Keast). CHAMPION - OF - CHAMPIONS PAIRS (A. V.
