TODAY’S GORE CARD

Pink Robe Will be In Demand SAILING LADY SHOULD WIN AGAIN The Gore Racing Club’s meeting will be concluded today when the fields, although not large, are of quite good strength. The going is again likely to be very firm and this is one of the reasons why a number have dropped out. The same starting times as the first day will be observed, the first race starting at 12.30 p.m. The win-and-place system of betting will again operFor his win yesterday Poniard has been risen 91b and The Surgeon, who finished second, has gone up 41b k 1 Mataura Highweight Handicap. ih e Surgeon finished well from the back but Poniard is likely to be ahead of him again. Poniard was always a winner over the last half-mile and his 10.12 should not trouble him today. A newcomer is Johnny, who has got through good work at Invercargill, although he has done little racing. He will not be suited by the firm track, but has a good record in this, type of race. Delrain finished a moderate fourth yesterday and Pink Del should beat him again. Last Post was beaten a long way from home in yesterdays race and it is difficult to *see him improving sufficiently to be in the money. Poniard, Johnny and The Surgeon will be the favourites. . •Volo Dale is a newcomer in the Hokonui Hack Handicap and the fact that she has also been engaged in the open sprint points to her chance being favoured by her party. She has raced quite well recently and the field is not a particularly strong one. Combat lost any chance he had at the start yesterday, and Mona’s Song was responsible for a particularly fine performance to finish second to Valmarch after being badly away. On the strength of this performance she should be hard to beat. Verdure will have to improve a lot on yesterday’s running. Spanish Lad and Aspire both lost their chances at the start yesterday and then put in good work only to fade out at the finish. The issue is fairly open, but there is reason to respect the chances of Mona’s Song, Aspire and Spanish Lad.

A USEFUL SECOND Kentucky Sun has the best form of those engaged in the Telegraph Trot. He was always in the firing line yesterday and finished on better than anything else to go under narrowly to Glenelad. Provincial may have improved by his outing yesterday and had he not been required to race all the way with Glenelad he may have won. He is a promising type of three-year-old. Solid support came for Dawn Direct yesterday, but she lost her chance at the start, and the same may be said for Loyalist. Willowbank, a member of E. Todd’s team, is one who will have a good following and he may be the actual favourite. Of the others Ebb Tide and Central Lad look to hold the best chances. Kentucky Sun, Provincial and Willpwbank are entitled to support. ■ '?' ■ ' , , Pink Robe is likely to be at a short price for the President’s Handicap. She made a bold effort to win all the way yesterday and the fact that she was beaten by only a head by Galleon points strongly to her claims. Pink Robe is likely to be the pacemaker from the start, and it will not be easy for the others to head her as she hangs on well. Amelita has been racing very consistently and on Winton form is entitled to consideration. Beam may find the journey beyond her while Grand Finale is safely held if yesterday’s running can be accepted as a guide. Daring Deed is unlikely to be given a chance to make her own rules. Roy Bun has been racing very solidly and he will appreciate the drop in weight. Island Linnet was not disgraced in yesterday’s chief event and she will be well suited by the distance. The betting may favour the chances of Pink Robe, Amelita and Roy Bun. COXCOMB’S CHANCE In finishing second to Sailing Lady Coxcomb went by far his best race to date and a repetition of this form will find him taking a power of beating in the Trial Handicap. The fact that he beat Roy Bun home was quite an important point in his placing. Ardmayle was slow away yesterday and did not show up. Lochie River will run out a sound six furlongs, while Astaire, who came in for solid support, finished second among the novices yesterday. Astral Flash has the ability to begin smartly and she may stay on better than at Winton. Coxcomb, Astral Flash and Lochie River may be the favourites.

Rodeur appeared a good thing beaten in the sprint yesterday and she is entitled to be favourite for the Borough Handicap. She was badly placed at the top of the straight and was then beaten by only a nose by Beam. Janet Gaynor has only to get the lead to take some heating, but there are a number of smart beginners likely to make it awkward for her. Viking did not run on yesterday, but Irish Birdcatcher was not disgraced and may show up. Western Song will appreciate his drop in weight and he will be one of those to carry the field along at a good pace. Rodeur and Western Song will be supported. No outstanding form has been shown by any of the runners in the Riversdale Trot, but Gold Streak will more than likely be favourite. He has won in his last two starts and from 48yds back he appears capable of keeping this field busy. Edith Grattan had every chance yesterday, but the run may have improved her. Jesse Owens and Salalon both have plenty of ability, but neither can be relied on to move off correctly. The same may be said for Dewey Cloud, who won very easily in saddle at Winton. Of the others Picotee may be the pick. Most support may come for Gold Streak, Edith Grattan, Salalon. Sailing Lady was receiving 81b from Roy Bun yesterday and she is now receiving lib from him. Even at this difference she should beat him again. Her success yesterday was one of the most decisive of the day and she is one who promises to carry on for some time. Johnny is engaged earlier, but if reserved for this race will have to be considered. Coxcomb was such a good second to Sailing Lady that he cannot be counted out, but he, too, is engaged earlier. Pink Del was a useful third in the highweight and with 7.7 she will carry the field along at a good pace. Sailing Lady and Pink Del may be the favourites as there are likely to be some deletions. The acceptances are as follows:
