GALLEON’S SUCCESS IN RECORD TIME

Opening Of Gore Racing Club s Autumn Meeting

The Gore Racing Club had fine weather for the opening of its autumn meeting yesterday, but the heat was oppressive for the greater part of the afternoon. There was a slight decrease in the attendance and this was also reflected in the betting, but the racing throughout the afternoon was of a good standard, and there were several very good performances. The gate receipts were £179 0/6 as against £193 18/-, a decrease of £l4 17/6. The totalizator handled £8385 (win £3705 and place £4680) as compared with £BBOl (win £4058 and place £4743). The decrease amounted to only £416. This slight financial decrease was only a minor point and with favourable fields today the club is likely to exceed last year’s returns without much difficulty. Promptness was strictly observed throughout the day and the meeting concluded only a few minutes behind time.

Favourites had a good innings throughout the day and four were returned winners while several others strongly fancied finished in the money. The dividends generally were small, especially those on the place machine, but this was chiefly caused by form having been well disclosed at recent meetings. Galleon was the principal winner of the afternoon and his dividend was one of the shortest recorded for some time. In view of his fine form at the recent Dunedin meeting he was the outstanding contestant of yesterday’s field but he had nothing to spare from Pink Robe, who set a fast pace in the early stages. Even then she saw the finish out to the end in a race run in record time. Galleon, however, is a great stayer and was turned out in excellent condition by the Invercargill trainer, F. W. Ellis, who won the Winton Cup last week with Amelita. Galleon, who has been an extremely difficult horse to train, stripped better than for some time. It was a popular success as he won in the manner of a real racehorse.

Beam upset calculations in the sprint race and returned the best dividend of • the day—nearly a score. There was no fluke about her success as she was chopped back at the start and gave the majority of the runners a start and a beating. It was her best form for many months. She was lucky, however, to beat Rodeur, who was not as well handled as she might have been. Rodeur was fourth at the top of the straight and finishe.. with a fine run but just failed to catch Beam. Foxlove i-.ced right up "to his promising form at Winton to beat the novice field, and Valmarch won over six furlongs in the manner of a champion. He carried 9.6 and ran the journey in Imin 13 2-ssec. Poniard was at a short price in the highweight handicap and he confirmed the confidence shown in him by winning well at the finish. There was no more impressive success than that of Sailing Lady who won over a mile as she liked.

The two trotting races provided keen finishes. Glenelad, a member of A. McLellan’s Invercargill team won the novice events, but he was fully extended to beat Kentucky Sun. J. Walsh produced the winner of the second trotting event, in Grattanella, a good •type of gelding by Grattan Loyal, who changed hands- a short time ago at a big figure. The starting was of quite a good standard although in one race several runners lost any chance they had by not getting away in line. One pleasing feature however, was that Mr Gieseler did not waste any time with his fields. The meeting was well managed, the secretary, Mr F. Young and the president, Mr J. B. Nicol being chiefly responsible for the proceedings being run off so smoothly. The ‘results were as follows:—
