her other 14 starts has never been ml a place. Her last three wins have oc- ( curred on the second days of meetings I at which she has been nearly last on the first days, and her caprice is not making her’ popular, states The Timaru Herald. Invercargill Training Not a great deal of work was carried out on the Invercargill tracks yesterday morning when the poles were out about 15 feet. Light rain fell at one stage of the proceedings but it soon passed over. Galleon (W. Ellis) and Amelita (Baker) sprinted home over half a mile in 49 l-ssec, the first furlong in 12 3-ssec, and the first two in 24 4-ssec. Galleon had the measure of his stablemate and he was doing his work like a tradesman at the finish. Amelita galloped quite well but it is possible that she will not be produced at Gore tomorrow. Western Song (C. Humphries) and Moneyless (Barclay) finished together at the end of six furlongs in Imin 19 3-ssec, the first furlong in 12sec, two in 24 4-ssec, three in 37sec and the last half in 54 4-ssec. Western Song carried a useful weight and after opening up a gap in the early stages he hung on well. Moneyless has improved with recent racing and he can be expected to perform up to his best form in the near future. Astral Flash (R. Humphries) and Guste (Strathern) finished on terms over six furlongs in lmin 19 4-ssec, the first two in 27 4-ssec and the last half in 52sec. Astral Flash did not show any signs of the soreness which appeared to trouble her at Wi-iton while Guste also put some life into his work. Both are members of W. E. Hazlett’s team and are coupled in the Trial Stakes at Gore. Both will not start, however, but as to which will be given a run has not yet been decided. Mona’s Song (Baker) and Coxcomb (W. Ellis) jumped off ahead of Foxlove (Preston) and ran half a mile in 50 2-ssec. Coxcomb shaded Mona’s Song at the post and he had only to race up to this form to show up at Gore. Mona’s Song is none the worse for her racing last week. Foxlove " r as left at the start and did not make up his handicap. On the plough Aspire (Ward) was doing better than Double Shot (Barclay) at the end of five furlongs in lmin 6 4-ssec, the first furlong in 14 l-ssec and the last half in 52 3-ssec. Aspire has pleased in her work since Winton although she was an unlikely starter at Gore at one stage, as no suitable rider was available for her. It is now likely that she will be ridden by J. Dooley. . Rona Bay’s Record

Rona Bay’s win in the Rotorua Cup brought her winnings up to £2727. The little mare has now won 19 races in 80 starts, and as she never gets high in the weights she is liable to win again. Rona Bay was bought as a yearling from her breeder (Mr R. B. Hines) by Mrs C. B. Gill, Te Aroha, but it was not till this season that she carried Mrs Gill’s colours. At first she was leased to J. W. Pankhurst, but before she began racing the lease was transferred to Mr O. Disley, of Wellington, a relation of the owner, and she was trained •by W. H. Jones. Her first 15 wins were in Mr Disley’s jacket. The lease ran out last July, and the mare, returned to Auckland district, has continued her winning ways in the north, with useful, dividends still the result of her successes. Totalizator Returns

Reduced gate returns naturally go hand ii» hand with decreased totalizator investments at a race meeting, but at Winton last week there was a suggestion that it was more than the smaller attendances each day that affected the investments, remarks The Evening Star. In farming communities (such as Winton and Gore) the drcp in the value of the wool clips must have a steadying influence on the spending power, and it will be interesting to note how the totalizator returns at Gore o:- Friday and Saturday of this week pan out. Last year this meeting handled £21,456, as against £16,672 10/- the previous year and £14,498.

Riders for Westland Meeting The following riding engagements have been made for the first day of the Westland Racing Club’s meeting, to be held today: M. Caddy, Delium and Gas Mask; A. E. Ellis, Wine Card, Royal Amphora, Necessary and Wino; G. Watson, Rebel Star and Lisnacree; A. Russell, Golden Dart and Gold Coast; G. H. Humphries, Owlsgleam; A. G. Parsons, Rotokino, Maroha, Culverden and Acceptable; H. W. Hibberd, Financiere or Kilrobe, Swordstick, Invoice, and Elmarch; G. Ridgway, Waitaka.

Bought for £5O A. S. McKay bought Master Anomaly before the Southland summer meeting for £5O. Master Anomaly was unlucky in having a good winning chance spoiled by his rider losing an iron at that meeting, but after his two successes at Dunedin he must be considered a cheap horse, for his winning stakes totalled £2BO. He was nominated for the steeplechase at Winton, but although he did not incur a penalty for his Dunedin wins he did not make the trip.

FAMOUS NEWMARKET

HANDICAP

SILENT SENTRY IN FORM

(By SIR MODRED)

With the Newmarket Handicap (6 fur.) set down for decision at Flemington tomorrow a considerable amount of interest attaches to the form of likely starters as mentioned from day to day in cabled news from Australia. _ ’Hie latest prospective candidate for this important sprint event to attract notice appears to be the three-year-old colt Silent Sentry, who won the Newmarket Trial Stakes (handicap), of £250 (6 fur.) at the Mentone Turf Club’s (Victoria) meeting on Wednesday. Details of the event are not to hand, but the colt’s performance must have been impressive to deserve special mention. To be accepted almost as an unknown quantity before his recent success Silent Sentry is by The Night Patrol (imp., and by a good horse in Steadfast, by Chaucer, by St. Simon) from Soft Nose (imp.) by Bridge of Allan from Dum Dum, by Carbine. The St. Simon-Carbine, by Musket cross is evident in the pedigree of Silent Sentry, a fact which will not pass unrecognized in Australia and New Zealand.
