ATTACK ON LOYALIST SEAPORTS
REBEL NAVAL AND AERIAL BOMBARDMENTS LONDON, February 23. The insurgent cruisers Canarias,' Baleares, Almirante Cervera and two auxiliaries and three aeroplanes made a combined attack and extensively damaged Valencia and Sagunto. A Government gunboat replied from Valencia and aeroplanes from Sagunto, where from 50 to 60 bombs and shells were dropped, shattering the forward funnel of the Almirante Cervera. The warships are reported to have lost formation and one was observed under tow. REBEL REPLY TO BRITAIN NOT SATISFACTORY (British Official Wireless) RUGBY, February 23. Questions addressed to the Foreign Secretary were answered in the House of Commons by the Prime Minister (Mr Neville Chamberlain) who said that a communication had now been received from the Salamanca authorities (rebels) in reply to the British Note protesting against the attack on British shipping. The terms of the communication could not be regarded as satisfactory by the British Government. The reply to be returned to the rebel communication was at present under consideration.
