LABOUR CANDIDATES SELECTED

NOMINATIONS FOR SIX CHRISTCHURCH SEATS (United Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, February 24. Labour candidatures for the six parliamentary seats in Christchurch were endorsed by the North Canterbury Labour Representation Committee according to a statement by the secretary of the committee (Mr R. M. Macfarlane). Five of the candidates are sitting members and Mr Macfarlane is the other. He contested the Christchurch North seat in 1935. The candidates are:— KAIAPOI.—Mr C. Morgan Williams. LYTTELTON.—Mr T. H. McCombs. AVON.—The Hon. D. G. Sullivan. CHRISTCHURCH EAST.— The Hon. H. T. Armstrong. CHRISTCHURCH SOUTH.—Mr E. J. Howard. e CHRISTCHURCH NORTH.—Mr R. M. Macfarlane. All except Mr Macfarlane were nominated by the 21 affiliated organizations; Mr Macfarlane was nominated by 20 organizations affiliated to the Labour Representation Committee. For the Riccarton seat held by Mr H. S. S. Kyle, six nominations have been received. The nominees will be asked if they are prepared to accept nomination and the replies will be considered when the committee meets on March 11. The committee is assisting in selecting a candidate for the Hurunui seat held, by the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes. CHRISTCHURCH MAYORAL ELECTION LABOUR’S CANDIDATE NAMED (United Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, February 24. Mr R. M. Macfarlane, secretary of the North Canterbury Labour Representation Committee, was chosen tonight to contest the Christchurch Mayoral election in Labour interests. Mr Macfarlane, ’who is 36 years of age, has been secretary of the Labour Representation Committee since 1929 and is at present a city councillor.. Candidates were chosen for local bodies as follows: City Council, 16 seats; Hospital Board, nine seats; Harbour Board, four seats. MR COX TO STAND FOR MAYORALTY OF DUNEDIN (Special to The Times) DUNEDIN, February 24. The Rev. E. T. Cox, who has occupied the Mayoralty of Dunedin for two terms, has been selected by the Labour Party as its official candidate for the Mayoral chair at the forthcoming elections.
