TOTALIZATOR TICKETS BOUGHT BY SON
FATHER CHARGED WITH ABETTING (United Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, February 23. “What offence is this? If I ask someone to buy a ticket for me, is that an offence? It certainly is a new one on me!” These remarks were passed by Mr E. C. Levvey, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court this morning when Albert Wallace Robinson was charged with aiding and abetting Horace Robinson, as agent, in the purchasing of two totalizator tickets. Mr M. W. Simes represented Robinson, who did not appear, a plea of guilty being entered. Mr Simes assured the Magistrate that this action constituted an offence. Senior-Sergeant Felton explained that defendant had got his 17-year-old son to purchase tickets. He had explained that he was unaware that he was committing an offence. “This is a matter that is not generally known by the public,” said Mr Simes. “The fact that a person in asking another to buy a ticket commits an offence as well as the purchaser is not generally appreciated. This sort of thing goes on hundreds of times everv day of every race meeting.” “I think we might treat this case as a warning and order him to pay costs,” declared the Magistrate.
