Miss Nancy Nicholson, Herbert street, leaves tomorrow for Christchurch to start duties as producer to the Canterbury Repertory Society. At the end of performance of Stanley McKay’s Gaieties at the Civic Theatre on Tuesday evening, the manager, Mr Joe Lawman, made a presentation to the leader of the orchestra, Miss May Brooke, to mark the fourteenth anniversary of her connection with the company. Miss E. M. North has been appointed principal of the Wellington Giris’ College in succession to Miss V. M. Greig, who has retired and who will be relinquishing the position at the end of March. Mrs J. Butterfield, The Ranch, Tuatapere, entertained a number of friends at her home at afternoon tea to celebrate Miss C. Ferguson’s birthday. The afternoon was spent in competitions, and songs were sung by Mrs Wixon and Master W. Wixon, and a duet was given by Mrs Blair and Mrs Wixon. The birthday cake with 20 candles was cut by the guest of honour, who thanked the hostess and those present for their gifts and good wishes. Variety and musical comedy star of pre-war days, Miss Ada Reeve, now 60 years old and grey-haired, is acting as hostess at a London West End milk bar and restaurant. She is usually in the restaurant every night—her job is to see that people are properly served. She has chosen this work to avoid loneliness. Ada Reeve was the star of “Gaiety” shows in her day. She was the original. Lady Holyrood of “Floradora.” Recently she spent eight years in Australia.

COUNTRY NEWS GORE Miss L. Undrill, of Christchurch, who has been the guest of Mrs E. C. Smith, Afton street, returned north yesterday morning. Mrs L. Bath, Ardwick street, has returned from a visit to Christchurch. Mr and Mrs D. L. Poppelwell, William street, leave for Auckland at the beginning of next week. The following members of the Gore Croquet Club are taking part in the junior section of the Otago croquet tournament at I*medin: —Mesdames F. J. Murray, D. O’Neill, G. Peterson and W. Trusler. Mrs Milton Green, Devon street, has returned from a visit to Dunedin. Mrs Denton Leitch, organizing secretary of the Otago branch of the League of Nations Union, is visiting Gore. Mrs W. L. McGoldrick and Miss Frances McGoldrick, William street, have returned from a holiday at The Rocks, Riverton. Mrs G. McLeod, Ardwick street, is visiting Timaru, where she is taking part in the South Canterbury croquet tournament. Miss Nancy Preece, William street, was the guest of Mrs J. S. Dickie, Waipahi, last week. Mrs R. B. Bannerman, Willis street, visited Christchurch last week. Miss I. Edwards, Otikerama, who has been spending a holiday at Dunedin and Christchurch, has returned home. Mr and Mrs F. E. Fitzgerald, of Wellington, are the guests of Mrs M. Fitzgerald, Devon street. Mrs W. McLennan, of Timaru, was the guest of Mrs G. McLeod, Ardwick street, last week.
