COMMENTS These are not your best poems, my cousins. The rest during the holidays did not help your work, but soon, perhaps, it will return to your usual standard. Two new writers, Cousins Myrtle Carter and Marie Sutton, show promise, and I hope to see more of their work. The last line of your poem was very weak, Cousin Isobel. 404th COMPETITION Story for Cousins 11 and under: “Why the Little Dog Laughed.”

Prizes of 1/- to Cousins Margaret McCleery (11), 193 Ritchie street, and Yvonne Hall (9), AparimaOtautau R.D.

Very Highly Commended 'and 3 marks to Cousins Alexandra McCleery (9), 193 Ritchie street, Wallace Baillie A.C., (9), 216 Nelson street, Raynor Huffadine (11), 439 Tweed street. Highly Commended and 2 marks to Cousins George Dickey (11), Gore-Waipounamu R.D., Ngaire Gardner (11), 154 Leet street, Richard Goodson (11), 64 Robertson street. COMMENTS You will notice • that this week only two of the cousins who sent entries for the junior competition were awarded neatness marks. In the other stories there were spelling mistakes, scratchinjs, blots, and bad writing. See how neatly you can write your entries, and try not to make mistakes. I know that some of the younger cousins find it

difficult to write with ink, and cannot help blotting the work, but some

of the nine, ten, and eleven-year-olds were the worst offenders. Also, space your work well, and leave room for corrections. NEATNESS MARKS One Neatness Mark to Cousins Alexander McCleery, Raynor Huffadine, Marion Stobo, Isobel McKenzie, Marie Sutton, Vera Lake, Clara Lobb, Patricia Henderson.

405th COMPETITION Poem for all Cousins: “In the Farmyard.” Story for all Cousins: “An Adventure Story.” Entries close MONDAY, February 21. 406th COMPETITION Poem for Cousins 12 and over: “Books.” Essay for Cousins 11 and under: “New Zealand.” Entries close MONDAY, February 28.
