JERSEY CATTLE

BREEDERS’ FIELD DAY AT KAMAHI ADDRESSES BY MR J. HELLYER Jersey breeders from many parts of the province assembled at the farm ? Mr A. McFadyen, of Kamahi, on Wednesday afternoon, to hear an address by a well-known Otago breeder and judge, Mr J. Hellyer, of Macandrew Bay, Dunedin. Included in those present was a party of agriculture st- - from the Wyndham District H g School, and these boys later took part in an open judging competition. in speaker was introduced by Mr McFadyen. , ... . After acknowledging the cordial welcome extended to him, Mr Hellyer outlined in detail the five mam points that were to be found in a good dairy cow —constitution, capacity, dairy temperament, a good blood circulation and the ability to produce high-test milk. Using selected cows from Mr McFadyen s well-known herd, the speaker amplified his remarks and showed exactly which features of the cows indicated quality in each case. One point was aptly illustrated in Mr Hellyer s own words: “More m ea t on the tail means less milk in the bucket.” He also said | that in his opinion the long pendulous udded was a poor sign. The udder should be attached high and wide at the back and well forward below, or lit would gradually droop as the cow grew older. One of Mr McFadyen s cows—a nine-year-old—was singled out for special mention by Mr Hellyer as having an ideal udder. The colour of the animal z was immaterial aid not necessarily “spoil the breed.’ At the close of the address and demonstration, a judging competition, with good prizes, and arranged by tne district herd-tester (Mr Woodfield) was held. A cow that had not been used in the demonstration was used for the purpose, and from a good entry ot young men and Wyndham students, the results were as follows:— , lan Winter (Wyndham District High School) 1; George McKay, Hicks, Edward Rabbidge (all of Wyndham High School) and W. Barron (Morton Mains) equal 2. , Mr C. S. Gordon (rector of the Wyndham District High School). thanked Mr Hellyer for his instructive addl*GSS. A special vote of thanks to Mr McFadyen for placing his herd and. property at their disposal was carried on the motion of Mr Clark, representing the Jersey Breeders’ Association.
