CONDITION OF STEAD STREET
To The Editor Sir,—On a motor tour from Timaru to your prosperous city and the Lakes, I have been much impressed with the wonderful improvements done to the roads since my last trip, but I am sure I am not alone by any means in having just cause for complaint about a strip of road over the estuary towards the beach of a mile or more, which is exceedingly rough and dangerous. This stretch has a surface of very rough shingle to plough through, and portions of boulders to drive over, and I was impressed with the fact that to the unwary and uninitiated motorists approaching the bridges at either end, there is a veritable danger of serious accidents through skidding and coming to grief. I am not writing on behalf of the reckless driver, but feel sure that I am one of the many who cannot understand such a state of affairs being allowed to exist almost within, the city, considering the enormous amount of daily traffic along that road by residents beyond the estuary, and the continuous throng which goes to view and enjoy the wonderful beach in such close proximity. Who is responsible? Surely the excessively taxeef motorist is entitled to better treatment.—Yours, e ’ C " E. PORTER. Timaru, February 17, 1938.
