TODAY’S WINTON CARD

Roy Bun Strongly

Favoured

EASTERN CHIEF IN DEMAND

The fields for the concluding day of the Winton Jockey Club’s meeting today have filled out well and there is every promise of first-class racing again being witnessed. The first race will start at 12.30 and'the win-and-place system of betting will again operate. A special passenger train will leave Invercargill at 11 a.m.

Bad News, who was sent out favourite yesterday, is again likely to be the hardest to beat in the Trial Stakes. She put up quite a useful effort and the outing is likely to have improved her. Cone Peak, usually a good beginner, is likely to be in the picture from the start. Her third placing was a useful effort. Foxlove has only to race up to his first day’s form to be seen to advantage. He was one of the last away in a big field and then finished fourth. Guste is a likely newcomer, and Lochie River has a good second at Wingatui to his credit. Of the others Silkwood appears to hold the strongest claims as she was a good second to Mona’s Song. In what promises to. be a good betting race Foxlove, Lochie River and Bad News will be supported. Yesterday’s winner, Happy Locanda, is meeting a much better field in the Oreti Trot, but from 36yds he should win again, as he had something to spare when he beat Foremost Junior. Jesse Owens is better placed here and he has only to begin correctly to be

near the front. Bonny Brydone and Vinola both raced well enough yesterday to suggest they will improve, while of the others Voloma cannot be counted out. In spite of her 60yds handicap she gave a similar start to a maiden field during the holidays and beat it in the particularly good time of 3min 21sec. She is a smart beginner, but she will need everything in her favour. The choice is for Happy Locanda, Bonny Brydone and Voloma. AN OPEN RACE Amelita has been raised 91b in the Soldier Members’ Memorial and Paladino has gone up 41b and Trivet lib. „At the difference Amelita should again win as the mile journey is right into her hands. She has been weighted at 8.5, but an allowance will reduce this to a handy weight. She finished on very resolutely when she won yesterday and in form she has always to be considered. Paladino will not be troubled by his raise and he is almost certain to assure a well-run race. Trivet raced well enough yesterday, but the others appear to hold her safely. All Humbug was well beaten over a mile by Grand Finale, who again holds him safely. Song Boy did not race up to expectations, but Daring Deed was not seen at her best as she lost any chance she had at the start. Roy Bun will be well suited by the mile journey. It was only the distance that beat him yesterday and on Wingatui running he is the one likely to cause Amelita concern. Favourites will be: Roy Bun, Amelita, Paladino.

Aspire is meeting Peony Rose on 31b better terms in the Awarua Hack Handicap, and at the difference Aspire should be the hardest to beat. She was definitely unlucky yesterday when she was one of the last away, was fifth at the top of the straight, and then got to within half a length of Peony Rose, who had the run of the race. At the weights Roseman is set a big task, but he, too, lost his chance at the start yesterday. Of the others Western Song, who did not race yesterday, should give a good account of himself, while Coat of Arms is improving all the time. Aspire, Peony Rose and Roseman appear to have most in their favour. Eastern Chief and Pandine are newcomers in the Turi Steeplechase Handicap. Yesterday’s winner, Trisox, has been raised 81b and the remainder have been dropped a pound or two. Eastern Chief won in his last start at Clifaen and a fresh horse in a race of this description has always to be considered. At Clifden he gave nothing else a chance. Trisox looks the only other likely to make a race of it, although Scotsden was solidly supported yesterday, but came to grief at the first fence. He can be expected to do better than this. Jollyanna did not stay on yesterday, but Vitaphone put up quite a creditable showing. Eastern Chief and Trisox are entitled to favouritism. MAY MAKE AMENDS The field for the Stewards’ Purse is much the same as that which contested the open sprint yesterday. Janet Gaynor was left at the start in her race the first day and was then in the firing line at the top of the straight. She has only to jump out smartly to take a lot of beating today. Rodeur will again be in it, as her performance yesterday was a particularly good one. Viking will have the best part to do to give this pair weight, while the others are unlikely to be given much chance. Most support will come for Janet Gaynor and Rodeur. On the first day’s running Foremost Junior is entitled to be favourite for the Dash Trot Handicap, as he races as well in saddle as he does in harness. He beat the others as decisively as he was beaten by Happy Locanda. Glenelad put up quite a good showing as also did Happy Times, but both appear to be safely held. Abel is useful in saddle as also is Betty Joffre. Dewey Cloud did not begin correctly yesterday but may do so with the weight on too Of the others Fortune King is the most likely. Foremost Junior Dewey Cloud and Glenelad will be SU Sev« e al‘ of the Benrnore Handicap field are engaged earlier. Roy Bun is well up to weight, while Ardchoille raced well enough in the Cup to suggest that he will show up here. Sailing Ladv will be improved by yesterdays outing and she is well-fitted to run out a mile. Last Post will also be suited by the distance and King Willow the pick of the others. Roy Bun, Ardchoille and Sailing Lady will command most tespect. |

The acceptances are as follows:— TRIAL STAKES, £lO5. Weight 8.0. No allowances. Six furlongs. Bad News Kippen Bilbao Last Pal Cone Peak Lochie River Coxcomb Silkwood Foxlove Stone Frigate Guste Wyn ORETI TROT HANDICAP, £125. Class 3.39. One mile and a-half.

POSTPONEMENT OF TOLAGA BAY MEETING TO BE HELD ON TUESDAY (United Press Association, GISBORNE, February 18. Because of bad weather the Tolaga Bay races to have been held tomorrow have been postponed till Tuesday.
