AMELITA’S WINTON CUP SUCCESS

KEEN RACING AT OPENING OF ANNUAL FIXTURE SLIGHT DECREASE IN TOTALIZATOR AND GATE RETURNS The Winton Jockey Club was favoured with bright sunshine for its annual fixture yesterday, but the heat was inclined to be oppressive at times. The attendance, however, was not up to expectations, the gate receipts amounting to £154 17/-, as against £206 5/- last year, a decrease of £5l 8/-- The decreased attendance was accounted tor by the harvesting operations which are in full swing m the district. The decrease was also reflected in the totalizator returns. The sum of £6662 was handled, as compared with £7646 10/-, a decrease of £984 10/-. As it was an oft day, however, the returns were quite satisfactory, ana any loss yesterday is likely to be made up today. One of the most pleasing features of the day was the promptness with which the programme was run off—the meeting was concluded well up to time.

The racing was of a good standard throughout, and although the fields in the Cup race and the open sprint were on the small side, both events were keenly contested and incidentally the favourite was beaten in each case. Favourites scored badly throughout and as a consequence the dividends were consistently good, indownfall of the favourites was probably responsible in part for the slignt falling off in the betting. The five-horse field in the Winton Cup provided a good contest for this old established race, and Amelita s success v/as one full of merit. She w ° s the pacemaker from the outset, and, ridden a fine race by the dimumtiye apprentice, W. F. Ellis, a son of the Invercargill trainer, F. W. Ellis, she held too many guns for the favourite, Paladino, at the finish. Amelita was given a great hearing when she returned to the birdcage, as it was realized that the Australian-bred mare has raced consistently but with repeated illluck. The sprint was won by the Riverton representative Rodeur, who was only recently promoted to open company. Rodeur won decisively in excellent time. . The steeplechase was an eventful race, only three of the seven starters completing the course. It resolved itself into a duel between Hunting Go and Trisox, the latter outstaying his rival at the finish. Trisox, although not at his best under the conditions, gave a fine exhibition of jumping. It was his first race since he broke down during National week and he has only to stand up to work to win an important ’cross country handicap. . Monas Song was too good for the novices, and the six furlong hack race saw Peony Rose win in a close finish. Both trotting races were won by candidates from Gore, Happy Locanda and Gold Streak, both being driven by J. Walsh. Happy Locanda has improved a good deal since he won at Tapanui in his last start, and Gold Streak, also a recent winner, outstayed his rivals. Mr F. Legat met with mixed success in his starting. Some of the fields were despatched in excellent line, but the start of the open sprint race saw the favourite, Janet Gaynor, badly left At the same time the starter cannot be blamed for mistakes by horsemen. The meeting was excellently run, starting times being closely observed and there were no inquiries to hold up proceedings. The secretary, Mr-L. G. de la Perrelle had arrangements in this department well in hand and the president, Mr J. J. Woods, and his committeemen were responsible in no small measure for the smooth manner in which the meeting was conducted. At the conclusion of the Winton Cup Handicap, won by Mr J. Graham’s Amelita, Mr J. J. Woods, president of the club, presented the owner with a trophy given by Mr George Dryden, Invercargill. Before asking Mrs Woods to hand Mr Graham the trophy Mr Woods referred to the performance of the winner, the jockey (W. F. Ellis) and the trainer, F. W. Ellis. After Trisox’s victory in the Winton Steeplechase Handicap, Mr J. Kean, a past president of the club, presented Mr J. A. Pears, owner of Trisox with the trophy given by Dunedin Breweries Ltd. Mr Kean congratulated the trainer and jockey, mentioning that both were members of an enthusiastic steeplechasing family. The trophy which was given to the club by Mrs Frank Cowie (Lady Barkly) in memory of her husband, was presented by Mrs Cowie to Dr W. Robertson, owner of Peony Rose, the winner of the Barkly Handicap. Mr Frank Cowie was president of the Winton Jockey Club in 1937. Results were: —
