USEFUL FINAL TRIALS

TRIPLE CONE’S SMART FIVE • AMELITA’S IMPROVED WORK Training work on the Invercargill tracks was full of interest yesterday morning when candidates for Winton were given their final trials. The main course, with the poles about 20 feet out, was in demand, and the going was much faster than it has been for some time. Several particularly good gallops were put up. Foxlove (Baker) led Bilbao (W. Ellis) and Marina Peak (Preston) home over half a mile in 53 3-ssec, the first two in 25 3-ssec. Foxlove has shown some ability in his work, while Bilbao has improved of late. Hunting Go (C. Humphries) jumped off at the mile post and was brought home the last half by a Last Dart novice (Low). Hunting Go ran the mile in Imin 52sec, the first half in 59sec and the last half in 53sec. The Balboa gelding is in great shape fot his engagement today. Moneyless (Barclay) and Astral Flash (Strathem) ran half a mile in 50 l-ssec, the first two in 24 2-ssec, and the last two in 25 4-ssec. Astral Flash had the measure of her opponent and she can be relied upon to give a good account of herself in her first appearance in public. She is a filly much above the average and has done a lot of good work in recent weeks. Moneyless is not sufficiently forward, but is gradually rounding up. Mona’s Song (Baker) and Silver Choir (Low) galloped five furlongs on the plough in Imin 5 l-ssec, the last half in 53 l-ssec. Mona’s Song was doing it the better at the finish, but the gallop would bring Silver Choir on. USEFUL MILE Paladino (Barclay) cantered down to the mile post, where he was joined by Eastern Chief (C. Humphries). They ran the first half in 56 2-ssec and Paladino had three lengths to spare at the post in Imin 48 4-ssec, the last half in 52 2-ssec —a particularly good gallop. Paladino is a great track worker and races right up to this form. He looks certain to improve on his good record this week. Eastern Chief put more dash into his work than earlier in the week.

Corban (Rowland) and Aspire (Ward) finished together at the end of five furlongs in Imin 5 4-ssec, the first furlong in 13sec, and the last half in 52 4-ssec. Corban has come on well during the last fortnight, and Aspire has made a good recovery from a recent injury. She is galloping much better than earlier in the season.

Coat of Arms (O’Connor) held too mafiy guns for Lochie River (Jenkins) over five furlongs in Imin 6sec, the last half in 53sec. Coat of Anns was under a good hold at the finish and could have done much better and he has only to race up to his track work to be heard from.

Galleon (W. Ellis) and Coxcomb (Preston) Iran five furlongs in imin 8 4-ssec without any trouble and could have improved a lot on this. Galleon has not looked back since his racing at Wingatui and, although he was not paid up for the first day at Winton, he is in good shape. Coxcomb again galloped generously. Western Song (C. Humphries), Double Shot (Barclay), Guste (R. Humphries) and Johnny (Ward) were responsible for a good gallop over six furlongs in Imin 17sec. The speed was on over the first piece as the first furlong was run in 11 4-ssec, two in 24sec and the last half in 53sec. Guste had half a length to spare from Johnny, with Western Song right up. It was a useful trial and showed Guste up in a good light. Western Song set a torrid pace over the first three furlongs and it was not surprising that he was stopping at the finish, where Johnny was doing better than at any other part. BEST OF MORNING Triple Cone (Jenkins) was too good for Stone Frigate (O’Connor) over five furlongs in Imin 3 3-ssec, one of the best gallops of the morning. Triple Cone is one of the most improved gallopers at local headquarters and he can be relied upon to give a good account of himself in the novice race today. Amelita (Baker) and Ardchoille (Rowland) were sent over a mile in Imin 49sec, the first two in 28sec, three in 42sec, half in 55 2-ssec, six in Imin 21sec, and the last half in 53 2-ssec. Amelita shaded her mate at the post and she appeared to be doing it easier. She is very well just now and she will not be disgraced in today’s Cup race. Ardchoille’s work was an improvement on his efforts of earlier in the week.

A two-year-old half-brother to Triple Cone and a three-year-old British Empire-French Belle filly ran two furlongs in 26sec and did their work nicely.
