JANET GAYNOR AT WINGATUI

RIDING ENGAGEMENTS FOR TODAY NEWCOMERS TO APPEAR ON SATURDAY There is only one bracket at Winton today, Triple Cone and Stone Frigate in the Novice Stakes. Although Sailing Lady has done well of late, her younger relative, Sea Lady,, is not shaping as well as she did earlier. Exchanged For a Dog It is stated that Fleet Lady, the dam of the two-year-old winner, Spendthrift, was secured by her present owners in exchange for a sheep dog. Not a Joke!

It is unlikely that Wyn was nominated for the Winton Cup for a joke, although he did not pay up. In view of this he will have to be counted on in a novice event in which he is to take part today.

Moving Short Baitruin moved very short in his work yesterday morning and he will not. carry out his engagement at the Winton meeting today. The firm tracks have troubled him.

Engaged on Saturday Neither Western Song nor Moneyless are engaged the first day at Winton, but the pair will be on hand the second day. Moneyless is not sufficiently forward, but Western Song should shape well. Likely to Improve

At one stage of his career Triple Cone promised to be above the average, but he has been some time in living up to this form. The Rosenor three-year-old has furnished a good deal of late and his track work has

shown a great improvement in recent weeks. The son of Silver Peak is an upstanding three-year-old and from now on he will be looked to to live up to the excellent breeding he is able to boast.

Today’s Riding Engagements Riding engagements for the Winton meeting today are as follows: G. Barclay, Paladino, Sailing Lady, Stone Frigate and All Humbug; R. Humphries, Double Shot; H. Hibberd, Aspire and Ardchoille; W. Ellis, Mona’s Song; W. Cooper, Coxcomb; M. f Caddy, Bilbao; E. Baker, Foxlove; C. Low, ’Jollyanna; T. Boyle, Hunting Go; J. Taylor, Kylemure; C. Humphries, Astral Flash; W: Jenkins, Triple Cone; V. Langford, Trisox; P. Spratt, Poniard; L. Hare, Janet Gaynor, Daring Deed, Roseman; M. Caddy, Roy Bun; W. Cooper, Scotsden; W. Shand, Royal Pal; J. Richards, Glenmure.

Well Represented The Invercargill trainer, F. W. Ellis, is well represented, at'■least numerically, in the Novice Stakes at Winton today. Four members of his team, Bilbao, Mona’s Song, Foxlove and Coxcomb, are engaged. Janet Gaynor’s Showing

It is now given out that the reason for Janet Gaynor’s poor showing the first day at Wingatui was caused by her being kicked at the post. This information was evidently known by someone and was reflected in the betting on the second day when she won pointlessly. On Wingatui running it is difficult to see how she will be beaten today. .

New Quarters The three-year-old Hunting SongFrench Belle filly that has been in work at Invercargill for some time has changed ownership and she is now a member of T. E. Pankhurst’s team.

Kylemure Schooled Kylemure (J. Taylor) was schooled over six fences at Invercargill yesterday morning, but he spoilt what would have been a good exhibition by running off twice. He was taken back on both occasions and did not make any error the second time. The brother to Faculties promises to make good at the jumping game, but he is still inclined to tun about at his fences as he did in the hunting field, although he makes no mistakes about clearing them. He will be making his first appearance in public at Winton today.

Second Day at Winton It is quite possible that several who did not pay up the first day at Winton will be on hand the second day. Royston, Lochie River and Eastern Chief are three with second-day engagements and present intentions are to carry these out. Lochie River came through his Dunedin racing without any ill-effects and in a maiden field at set weights he will have to be seriously considered after his good display last week. Eastern Chief won in his last start and worked well yesterday morning.

A Plunge of £3OO The Timaru Herald states that it is reported that the dividend on Paladino at Wingatui on Saturday was cramped by an investment of £3OO by a punter who has no connection with the horse or the stable. The Owner It transpires that Mr A. K. Firth was the purchaser of the colt by Beau Pere from Drama for 1150 guineas, and the colt by Beau Pere from Barbacan for 1000 guineas. Mr Firth is the owner of the crack three-year-old Royal Chief, who, with the New Zealand Cup winner, Ceme Abbas, will visit Sydney for the spring meeting this year. Melbourne Cup Winner The Trump, hero of the spring racing carnival in Melbourne, is causing his trainer, S. W. Reid, considerable concern, because of lameness in one of his fore joints. Spelled in the stables after his spring triumphs, The Trump is reported to have pleased his associates when placed in work again, but lameness developed quickly, and as he has never been a sound horse on his legs, the concern was justified. The Trump was fired on a knee as a three-
