A FAST TRACK LIKELY

Opening Of Annual Meeting INTEREST IN CROSS COUNTRY EVENT There is every promise of fine weather for the opening of the Winton Jockey Club’s meeting today, and with a fast track assured, racing of a high standard is promised. The Winton Club has long been regarded as the oldestestablished turf institution of its kina in Southland, and its unbroken record of fixtures is bettered by no other club in the province. The Winton district is a keen racing one and one which has always been known as the home or the steeplechaser. For this reason it is gratifying to find that the Winton Steeplechase, to be decided today, has drawn one of the best elds, .at least from a numerical point of view, for some years. In the past the club had some difficulty in retaining cross country events on its card, but with the club now racing much later in the season than it did for some years, the steeplechase events have drawn much stronger fields. Today’s steeplechase will be one of the feature events of the programme. , Although the open races on today s programme did not fill as well as anticipated the hack races have seldom been stronger. The Winton track is one of the fastest in the province, and it was reported yesterday that the course has seldom been in better condition. The win-and-place system of betting will operate and the first race is timed to start at 12.30 p.m. A special passenger train will leave Invercargill at 11 o’clock each morning. The following horses will be supported: — NOVICE STAKES: Bow Street, Triple Cone, Bad News. OTAPIRI TROT HANDICAP: Dewey Cloud, Glenelad, Kentucky Sun. WINTON CUP HANDICAP: Paladino Trivet.
