During the recent storms in Hawke’s Bay dairy cattle were cut off in many instances, says .The Napier Daily Telegraph, and in one case the owner was observed, with helpers wading through flood with water up to his waist in an endeavour to save his stock from threatened destruction. Recently constructed haystacks in the Pakowhai district are likely to suffer severely as a result of the flood. Many of these were completely marooned by water, which lapped at their sides, and several showed signs of collapse. On those flooded areas where the hay had been cut but not yet stacked the loss of crop will, of course be complete. A survey of the Gisborne district in regard to the deterioration of teeth in sheep has been authorized, according to a statement made by Dr C. S. M. Hopkirk, officer in charge of the Wallaceville Laboratory, when speaking at a meeting of farmers in Poverty Bay. Dr Hopkirk said that the veterinary supervisor at Gisborne had drawn attention to the deterioration of teeth, and he had been authorized to undertake a survey of the question. His department wished to know whether the trouble was confined to any particular class of country before proceeding further with the investigation.
