Side visibility is important when turning from one 'road into another, and in certain circumstances it is advisable to drop the side-window to ensure full vision, especially if the window is obscured by moisture. This precaution is also highly desirable when backing out (from the garage or drive, for instance) into the road, if other traffic is not to be inconvenienced.
