FLOWER SHOW AT WINTON

DECREASE SHOWN IN ENTRIES CI.F.AN AND WELL-GROWN EXHIBITS The Winton and District Horticultural Society’s twelfth annual show was held in the Radio hall at Winton yesterday. There were hot so many entries as in former years, but the displays were quite good considering the dry weather. There was a big attendance of the public in the afternoon and evening. Mr A. T. Newman, of Gore, judge of ■the cut flower section, said that the display was quite fair, but he bad seen better competition. Most of the exhibits brought forward were clean and well-grown. The showing of asters was quite good, but the blooms were not at their best yet. Carnations were only fair, this no doubt because of the long spell of dry, hot weather. Dahlias, while few in number, were seen in a satisfactory display. One of the best classes in the section was the gsu" lardias. These made an extremely good show. Gladioli were good, the main faults being that blooms were too open and badly spaced. Pansies and violas, because of the dry weather were po°yThe roses had passed their best and although there were many entries the quality was not up to show requirements. Sweet peas made strong competition, but had also been affected by the dry season and were nothing outstanding, borne good specimens of flowering shrubs were shown and made quite good and interesting exhibits. In the fruit and vegetable sections, said the judge, Mr C. J. Burrows, of Gore, the apples were the finest he had seen exhibited for many years. ihe collections were outstanding and the colour good, but competitors were advised to have fewer varieties and better quality.
