STANLEY McKAY’S “GAIETIES”

“A FANTASY IN GOLD’’

Mr Joe Lawman, the clever whistling and singing Australian comedian with Stanley McKay’s “Gaieties” Vaudeville and Revue Company, is to make his first appearance in Invercargill at the Civic Theatre on Monday, February 21, when “A Fantasy in Gold” is to be staged. Mr Lawman was in New Zealand last year with the company, making a big name in Christchurch, Wellington, and Auckland, but circumstances prevented the show coming to Invercargill. There is little doubt that he will make a strong appeal to the laughter-lovers of this city, as he has all the attributes of a comedian and has the ability to get his work over the footlights. Other artists of outstanding merit in this year’s “Gaieties” are the Hilo Duo (George and Wehi Greig), Hawaiian entertainers, who were for three years valued members of Sir Harry Lauder’s company; Les Diamondos, from the Folies Bergeres, Paris, in beautiful statutory posing, their bodies being covered in diamond dust on which powerful coloured lights are played; Les Fredos, Continental acrobatic violinists; Heather Wright, New Zealand’s champion eccentric dancer and contortionist; Elvy Ferguson, dainty solo violinist; James, the man with the cigarettes; Leo Trenette, Australian tenor; Cliff O’Keefe, basso, leader of the Big Four Male Quartet; Elton Black, Scottish comedian; Wyn Edgerton, soprano; Alice Bennetto, mezzo-soprano; and George Corelli, character actor. The Gaieties’ Sunkissed Ballet, May Brookes’s orchestra, beautiful dressing, and the latest in staging are features of this opening revue. Reserves are at Beggs, no extra charge being made for booking.
