THREAT OF CRISIS IN INDIAN POLITICS
RELEASE OF PRISONERS URGED BY CONGRESS
CALCUTTA, February 15. The governments of Bihar and the United Provinces have resigned because the governors would not agree to the release of political prisoners. A serious constitutional crisis is threatened throughout India because of the desire of the Government, which is dominated by "the Nationalist Congress, to release political prisoners. The difficulties are thus far confined to the United Provinces and Bihar, but it is probable that the resignations of the Ministers in these provinces may be followed by the resignation of the remaining five Congress governments. Mr Chandra Bose, president-elect of the Congress Party, says that the Bihar Ministry has resigned under instructions from the Congress Party’s working committee. The other governments will certainly resign should the governors maintain their opposition to the release of political prisoners.
