QUEENSTOWN RIFLE-SHOOTING MATCH FOR PRESIDENT’S TROPHY The fourth rifle-shooting competition for the President’s Trophy and the P. Reid aggregate was held on the Queenstown range. The weather was hot, but no wind was blowing. Conditions were rather different at the 500 and 600 yards range.

HOT WEATHER The weather has been very hot and the maximum readings at the meteorological station are as follows: Monday, 88.4 degrees; Sunday, 89.2 degrees; Saturday, 84.2 degrees; Friday, 85.2 degrees and Thursday, 84 degrees, in the shade. Numerous readings in the sun were over 100 degrees. With the bright, cloudless skies and absence of wind, the visitors are enjoying perfect holiday weather. An innovation in Queenstown is the sport of aquaplaning and several enthusiasts have been watched by crowds on the waterfront PERSONAL Miss M. Billington, Wellingtonj is the guest of Mrs W. Hales. Mr and Mrs Cochrane and family, of Otahuti, are in their cottage in Queenstown. Miss Joyce Gray and Miss Margaret Halliday, Invercargill, are having a camping holiday in Queenstown. Mrs Sew Hoy, accompanied by Miss V. Sew Hoy and Master R. Sew Hoy, are spending a holiday in Invercargill. BLUFF CRICKET The Bluff junior A cricket team will play Old Boys at the Biggar street west ground on Saturday and the junior B team will meet Railway on its own ground. In the junior A competition Bluff and Old Boys are second equal with 12 points. The junior team has only won three matches so far. FUNERAL There was a big attendance at the funeral yesterday afternoon of Mr William Spencer (Te Paro). He was buried in the Bluff cemetery, the funeral leaving the house of his son, Mr T. S. Spencer, Henderson street. The pallbearers at the house were Messrs H. and A. Ryan, T. W. Spencer, R. Shepard and G. and S. Spencer, grandsons, and at the graveside Messrs G. West, M. Joss, H. and W. Waitiri, H. Butterfield and E. Cameron. The services at the house and the graveside were conducted by the Rev. Mr Knowles-Smith. WINTON BOWLS On the Winton Bowling Club’s green, E. Horn beat J. de la Perrelle in a colt’s singles match. M. McGregor now leads in the colt’s singles championship, with only one loss. In the men’s doubles championship at the Central Club, Pierce and Darnill beat Hughes and Walker, Metzger and Watson beat Harvey and Brumby, Balch and Balch beat Brown and Doherty, and Tilley and Feam beat Balch and Balch. Pierce and Darnill now meet Tilley and Feam, the winners to play Harvey and Brumby. The winners of the latter match will play Metzger and Watson in the final.
