DESTRUCTION IN MADRID
AREA LAID WASTE BY RECENT EXPLOSION
DEATH ROLL OF 700 (Received January 14, 6.30 p.m.) HENDAYE, January 13. It is reliably stated that 700 were killed in the explosion in Madrid which shattered a district 1000 yards by 200 yards. A message published on Wednesday stated: "Mystery surrounds reports from Valencia of a terrific explosion in Madrid which wrecked eight blocks of houses and killed 100 persons. Telephone communication between Madrid and Paris was severed for some hours. It is not known whether the Incident was the result of an explosion or an official step to prevent news leaking out.” INSURGENT PATROLS NEAR GIBRALTAR (Received January 14, 6.30 p.m.) GIBRALTAR, January 13. The insurgents have greatly strengthened the coastguards in Hie neighbourhood of Gibraltar, equipping them with machine guns and ordering them, to fire without warning. They have also posted an armed cavalry detachment at the Lalinea frontier, with the object of checking desertions.
