FIRE DESTROYS CHEESE FACTORY
BIGGEST PLANT BUT ONE IN MANAWATU PALMERSTON NORTH, January 14. A fire at 6 o’clock this morning completely destroyed the Mangawhata dairy factory, the biggest cheese manufacturing plant but one in the Manawatu, in which the make was 360 tons last season. The flames had absolute control when the alarm was given. Three young assistants sleeping in a whare next to the factory were not aware of the outbreak. The insurance on the building, which was used as a cheese factory for 20 years, and on the plant, were about £5OOO.
The new hydro-electric plant on the Etzel, Canton Schwytz, where an artificial lake six miles long and containing 288,000,000 Cubic feet of water has been made, was opened recently. ITie turbines will yield nearly 120,000 h.p. of electrical energy, 55 per cent, of which is to be used by the Swiss Federal railways.
