PREVENTION OF HYDATIDS

AMENDMENT TO DOG REGISTRATION ACT

ROAD MAINTENANCE IN SOUTHLAND COUNTY

Attention was drawn by the Department of Internal Affairs in a circular to the Southland County Council yesterday to a clause in the Dog Registration Amendment Act which required that local authorities responsible for the registration of dogs should keep a sufficient supply of an approved hydatids remedy to supply dog-owners with the prescribed quantity of the remedy at the time of making registration. The communication was received. The meeting was attended by Crs A. S McNaught (chairman), F. Trapski, J McNeill, T. Golden, G. Wraytt, J. Dennis, G. Whittingham, L. A. Niederer and W. M. Norman. The county engineer (Mr G. R. Muward) drew the council’s attention to some miles of weak road south of Kapuka, where the haulage of heavy loads would do serious damage. He referred in particular to Hodgson and Lawson roads and recommended that an application be made for these roads to be classed as Class IV. Hodgson road extended from .the junction of the Kapuka south road to the intersection of Lawson road, a length of two miles and a-quarter, and Lawson road extended from the junction of Marshall road southwards to the Waituna Lake, a distance of four miles and a-half. It was decided to apply to the Commissioner of Transport to have the roads classified as Class IV roads. J. A. Mcßae (Hedgehope) advised that he was prepared to give £5O, or to do the earth work in constructing approaches to the bridge to his property and pay the balance in money. It was decided to instruct the engineer to prepare an estimate of the cost of the work for next meeting.

Mrs W. Fosbender (New River Ferry) wrote asking the council to repair the culvert up to her house.—Referred to the. engineer and riding member. H. Day (Oreti) asked the county to form and gravel the road to his property.—lt was decided to advise the writer that a Government grant would be applied for next year. Mrs W. S. Taylor (Dipton) applied for permission to clear gorse and clean out a water hole on a by-road leading to her property for a drinking place for milking cows.—Left in the hands of the foreman with power to act

MEETING WITH GORE BOROUGH The town clerk of Gore advised that his council was willing to meet members of the Southland County Council to discuss the proposal about the Croydon-Retreat road and suggested that the meeting take place in February.—lt was left to Crs Whittingham and Trapski to make the necessary arrangements. Martin Voight (Pukerau) wrote asking that gravel be put down on the road leading to his property before the wet weather set in.—The work is to be done.

The resident Public Works engineer (Mr W. G. Pearce) wrote asking whether the council had come to any decision for making improvements to the road in Waikaka giving access to Millane, Walker and others.—lt was decided to advise that the council was prepared to spend £l5O on the work. The condition of the road between Waikawa and Curio Bay was referred to by Mr J. E. Weir, of Waikawa. “My father took up property here almost 60 years ago,” he wrote, “and, although rates have been paid all these years, we still have no access to it. Except for a clay road which is impassable for motor-cars in wet weather, there is no means of access to the property.”

The writer asked the council to metal the road.

It was decided to advise the applicant to apply for a free Government grant. A petition signed by 40 ratepayers asked the council to negotiate with the Public Works Department to ensure that the flood .menace in Pukerau township was removed before the completion of the raising of the road surface between the brick kiln and Mr G. Styles house. “It is obvious,” stated the petition, “that if matters are left as they are and the road surface is raised, the flooding will be worse in the future than it has been in the past.” It was decided to foi’ward a copy of the petition to the Public Works Department.
