DISPUTE AT BELFAST WORKS SETTLED
TERMS NOT ANNOUNCED (United Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, January 12. The labour dispute which left idle yesterday the Belfast freezing works of Thomas Borthwick and Sons (Australasia) Ltd. was amicably settled this afternoon. The chain employees had resumed work in the morning and in the afternoon were met by company officials. The union spokesmen said tonight that the dispute was at an end and no further trouble was expected. The terms of the settlement were not announced.
At a meeting before work in the rr orning the chain employees discussed the position and at their request the additional man the company had proposed to place in each chain agreed to stand down until the dispute was settled. Today the chain worked at a strength of 35, the maximum number the men desire, and it is understood by the union that this number will be kept in future. Mr P. Borthwick, of Thomas Borthwick and Sons, arrived in Christchurch this morning from Masterton and, it is understood, discussed the position with the men. It is stated that other complaints by the workers concerning the employment of alleged non-unionists were also settled today by negotiation with the company. No further trouble of any sort is expected.
