INFLUENZA 150 YEARS AGO
LONDON, December 1, Influenza was fashionable 150 years ago, according to Robert Bums. In 1788 he caught the complaint. The letter describing his wretchedness was sold in a London auction room this week for £lO5. He wrote:— “I am scarce able to hold up my head with this fashionable influenza: yet with only half a spark of life I would thank yau.” A reference to “a haughty landlord to whom I owed what I could not pay,” shows his • >verty at the time. Another Bums manuscript realized £3BO. Both were bought for the Bums Museum at Alloway.
