GARSTON

FARM SALE REPORTED Although the weather has been exceptionally dry and for a time the position for farmers looked serious, a few welcome showers of rain have helped to relieve it to a certain extent. Crops, though not up to their usual standard, promise to be fair, and lambing in most cases has been quite satisfactory. Miss Cunningham’s farm, Wainui, has been sold to Messrs J. and G. Gordon. A sale of stock and implements was held and brought very satisfactory prices. Miss Cunningham has lived in Garston for the greater part of her life. She acted for about 13 years as postmistress at Garston, but on the death of her brother she had to relinquish the post and take over the management of the farm. This she did most successfully for about 11 years, until compelled recently to retire because of ill-health.

A farewell function was tendered to Miss Cunningham by many friends, and she was presented with a travelling case and rug. On leaving Garston, Miss Cunningham made a gift to the Presbyterian Church of an organ. Mr Hendry, of Dunedin, who has been appointed head teacher of the Garston school, has arrived in the district and takes up his duties at the beginning of next year.
