LORNEVILLE STOCK SALE

BIGGEST ENTRY FOR SEASON

SUPPLIES EXCEED DEMAND MOST CLASSES OF STOCK EASIER The biggest entry of stock since last autumn was forward at the Lorneville stock sale yesterday which was a double market following the break last week for the Southland summer show and was the last sale until January 11. In the sheep section the entry exceeded 2000 head and greatly exceeded the demand with the result that the market was easier than a fortnight ago. The fat cattle yarding was the biggest for several years, over 300 head being offered. Because of the big sheep and store cattle entries, the fat cattle sale was not begun until after three o’clock and selling continued almost until dark, rain in the early evening making conditions unpleasant for those who had to remain until the end. Despite the heavy over-supply of cattle the market was fairly buoyant, although values showed a reduction on the last sale. The store cattle pens were well filled and not much interest was taken in the sale, but a few pens of store sheep sold well. Following is a comparison of the entries for the last two sales:

Included in yesterday’s yarding were 10 dairy cows, 12 bulls and 15 vealers. FAT CATTLE The entry was the second largest in the last 20 years, comprising more than 360 head, All the normal fat cattle accommodation and a portion of the store cattle yards were occupied by the entry which did not include any really heavyweight cattle. There was a good proportion of medium weight bullocks, cows and heifers and also a fair proportion of unfinished sorts of all classes. In spite of the extra large entry competition was quite keen and values, although on a slightly lower basis, remained the same practically from the beginning to the end. Prime quality bullocks realized up to £l2, good quality £lO 10/- to £ll 5/-, handyweights £9 10/- to £lO 5/-, light and unfinished £7 10/- to £8 10/-; extra prime quality cows up to £lO 12/6, good quality £8 to £8 15/-, medium £7 to £7 15/-, light £6 to £6 10/-; aged and unfinished down to £3; prime quality medium weight heifers £8 to £8 17/6, handyweights £7 to £7 10/-, light weights £6 5/- to £6 15/-, small £5 to £5 10/-. STORE CATTLE The entry was bigger than a fortnight ago and considerably larger than usual for the time of the year, the shortage of feed causing growers to dispose of store stock. The empty cows and heifers met a good demand. Two pens of young empty cows sold at £4 12/— and £4 12/6 and single entries of exceptionally good quality realized up to £6. The highest prices for empty heifers were from £4 10/- to £5 12/6 with younger sorts at £3 16/-. Yearling steers and heifers sold at from £2 5/to £2 15/- and two-year-olds to £4 10/-. FAT SHEEP The entry of fat sheep and lambs was the largest for the season and exceeded 2000 head with 600 lambs included There was good competition for fat lambs, freezing buyers operating freely at schedule rates, while butchers competed keenly for heavyweight lambs for the Christmas trade. Extra prime heavy lambs realized up to 31/3, prime heavy 28/- to 29/6, prime quality freezing lambs 26/- to 27/-, good quality 24/9 to 25/9, medium and lighter sorts down to 21/6.

The fat sheep entry included some really good quality ewes and wethers, but compared with the previous market a fortnight ago values were considerably easier. The bulk of the entry was sold, but the supply far exceeded the active demand of buyers. Prime heavy wethers realized up to 33/6, prime quality 30/- to 31/6, good quality 28/- to 29/6, medium 26/- to 27/-, light and unfinished 21/- to 23/6; prime heavy young ewes up to 24/-, prime heavyweights 20/- to 21/6, good quality 18/to 19/-, medium 15/6 to 16/6, light and unfinished 12/- to 14/The Southland Farmers’ Co-operative Association Ltd. sold: —Account A.
