PENALTY FOR FALSE STATEMENT

(United Press Association) NELSON, December 21. Fines totalling £65 were imposed on William Edward A. Newenham in the Magistrate’s Court by Mr T. E. Maunsell, S.M., on 13 charges of obtaining £6O 19/- under the Employment Promotion Act by making false statements. It was stated that eleven charges related to a son whom defendant was not , supporting and two to a woman who, he stated was his housekeeper, but who‘he admitted was living with him as his mistress. The Magistrate said he considered defendant had put forward an audacious proposition. If the defence was upheld it meant that a man unemployed could take a woman and commit adultery, and if she did the housework he could call on the State to provide for her.
