DUST NUISANCE

Danger On Racecourse Road REQUEST TO COUNTY COUNCIL The attention of the Southland County Council was drawn yesterday by the secretary of the Southland Racing Club to the danger caused by the dust nuisance on Racecourse road on race days, and a request was made that the road be watered on the mornings of January 3 and 4, the days of the summer race meeting.

It was agreed to have the work done provided the club contributed £lO, toward the expense. There were present at the meeting of the council: Crs A. S. McNaught (chairman), T. Golden, J. McNeill, W. M. Norman, G. W. Whittingham, G. Wraytt, J. Dennis, L. A. Niederer and F. F. Trapski. The representation of the council on the Southland Hospital Board, under the new constitution which comes into operation on January 31, was considered, and it was agreed to accept the withdrawal of Cr Wraytt. At present there are seven representatives, Messrs W. Clark, T. Golden, W. Grieve, A. McKenzie, G. Wraytt, W. Norman and F. F. Trapski, and under the new constitution the representation of the County Council is reduced to six. A petition from 11 residents of Yorke road and Gloucester street, asking for a footpath in Yorke road, was referred to the member for the riding and the engineer with power to act Mr H. C. Wilkes wrote complaining about an open ditch in Bainfield road. The matter was referred to the riding member and the engineer. A request from Mr C. E. Rowe, Mataura, that something should be done to prevent the pollution of the Waimumu river, was referred to the member for the riding and the engineer with power to act. Waihopai riding.—Gorge-Waituna road, £139 1/10 Gorge road filling, M. Evans, £3O. Oreti riding.—Orr road, W. Dawson, £96 17/6.
