WELLINGTON, December 21. Following is the special weather forecast for Southland issued by the Meteorological Office, Wellington: Strong north-west to westerly winds, of gale force in places, backing to south-westerly. Weather changeable and squally, with ram at tunes. Temperatures becoming cooler. Seas rather rough to rough. Following is the Dominion forecast:— Weather cloudy to overcast in western districts from Taranaki southwards and the southern portion of the South Island, with scattered rain, elsewhere still mainly fair, but some isolated local showers probable. Temperatures warm, but becoming cooler tomorrow in the south. General Situation.—The pressure is relatively high over the northern portion of the North Island, while a series of westerly depressions continues to cross the South Island. A rather intense one of the series is now approaching across the Tasman Sea. Winds. —Light to moderate and variable at first north of New Plymouth and Napier, otherwise moderate to strong northerly to westerly prevailing, rising to gale force at places about and south of Cook Strait, backing shortly to southerly in the far • south and southerlies probably extending to beyond Cook Strait within the next 24 to 36 hours. Seas.—New Zealand waters, rough in the Cook and Foveaux Strait areas and rising south of Cape Egmont, elsewhere slight to moderate; eastern Tasman Sea, moderate northerly winds and moderate seas in the northern portion, moderate to strong north-west to westerly, later backing to south-westerly, in the southern portion, with rather rough seas.
