Highly commended and 2 marks to Cousins Wallace Baillie (8), 216 Nelson street, Melva Lake (7), Tussock Creek, Margaret Hyndman M.M.S., (14), 33 Nelson street, Alan Lake (10), Tussock Creek, Eva Lake (14), Tussock Creek, (2 entries), Dorothy Lake (8), Tussock Creek, Betty Grace A.C., (12), 233 Spey street, Helen Dalgarno A.C., (15), 71 Grey street, Gladstone, Alexander McCleery (8), 193 Ritchie street, Raynor Huffadine (11), 439 Tweed street, Pattie Smith (14), Glencoe R.D., (2 entries), Vera Lake A.C., (13), Tussock Creek, Section 8, Margaret McCleery (11), 193 Ritchie street. COMMENTS My cousins made a special effort for the Birthday Chronicle, and the result of their work is very satisfactory. You will notice, Cousin Isobel, that I omitted a sentence from your poem. It was not grammatically correct, and needed a great deal of alteration: otherwise your verse was good, though not the best you have written. Cousin Marion is making progress with her verse-writing and I hope to see some excellent work from her next year. Cousin Joyce is another whose writing has improved recently. Of the other entries I liked tnose of Cousins Eva Lake and Wallace Baillie.

400th COMPETITION Story for all Cousins: “Choosing the Birthday Present.” Prizes of 1/- to Cousins Wallace Baillie (9), 216 Nelson street and Isobel McKenzie M.A.C., (16), Dipton. Very Highly Commended and 3 marks to Cousins Richard Goodson A.C., (10), 64 Robertson street, Helen Dalgarno A.C., (15), 71 Grey street, Betty Grace A.C., (12), 233 Spey street, Mary Cameron (12), Glenfalloch Station, Nokomai, Vera Lake A.C., (13), Tussock Creek, Section 8, Glencoe R.D. Highly Commended and 2 marks to Cousins Margaret McCleery (11), 193 Ritchie street, Isla Smith (10), Section 2, Invercargill-

Otara R.D., Alexander McCleery (8), 193 Ritchie street, Jean McKenzie (12), 103 Panton street, Eva Lake A.C., (14), Tussock Creek, Dorothy Lake (8), Tussock Creek, Alan Lake (10), Tussock Creek, Marion Stobo M.A.C., M.A., (14), 20 Wellington street, Pattie Smith (14), Tussock Creek (2 entries). COMMENTS Cousin Wallace is one of the most promising of the younger writers, and his stories are always treated in an original manner. Cousin Isobel, who is last year’s gold medallist, is a consistent writer, and though her prose contributions are not always as good as her verses, the entry this week is of a high standard. The older Little Southlanders will need to look to their laurels if the younger cousins continue to improve. NEATNESS MARKS

One Neatness Mark to Cousins Helen Dalgarno, Vera Lake, Isla Smith, Jean McKenzie, Eva Lake, Dorothy Lake, Betty Grace, Raynor Huffadine.

401st COMPETITION For all Cousins: “A Letter to Father Christmas.” Poem for all Cousins: “Christmas Eve.” Entries close MONDAY, December 13. 402nd COMPETITION For all Cousins: “A Holiday Letter.” Entries close MONDAY, January 31.
