PROSPECTS FOR GOOD SHOW

STOCK ENTRIES AT RECENT LEVEL

MORE COMPETITION IN HEAVY HORSES

The prospects for a good show tomorrow are bright. The total entries are smaller than last year, but reductions in the baking section and one' of the dairy cattle sections account almost entirely for the falling off in entries. In the horse section, there should be the usual strong competition, made stronger on this occasion by the presence of one or two outside exhibitors who have already made their presence felt at southern shows this season. The draught horse entries show a small increase compared with last year and it is expected that one of the finest exhibitions of the Clydesdale breed ever

seen at Wyndham will be paraded during the day. There will be some very strong classes in the light horse section and the ponies will again be an important feature. Outside of Invercargill, Wyndham is always able to stage the best cattle show in Southland and in most of the sections tomorrow the standard will be very high. The Friesian section will be stronger than last year and there will be a big contingent of Jerseys forward, but for the first time in many years there will be very little competition in Ayrshires. These three breeds are well represented in the Edendale and Wyndham districts where are to be found some of the strongest purebred studs in the province and it is unfortunate that after its poor showing at Gore for several years, the Ayrshire breed should become the Cinderella section of the Wyndham show also. The high quality of the flock sheep on the flats and ridges close to Wyndham should again be well demonstrated. The entries are at a satisfactory level, approximately equal to those of last year, and if the condition of sheep at recent southern shows can be accepted as general, a very high standard should be set.

Although connoisseurs make a close inspection of the cattle stalls and sheep pens, many visitors to a show are content to judge a show from the grand parade and the ring events during the afternoon. The competitions at Wyndham are usually a strong feature and the heavy entries for this show ensure an interesting programme.
