RACING NOTES

ORTYX TO REAPPEAR AT WINGATUI GAY BLONDE A HIGH CLASS SPRINTER Nominations for the Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting close today at 5 p.m. Nominations for the Cattle Flat meeting close at 9 p.m. tonight. Chile who is engaged at Wyndham has not raced for 18 months. He is a member of P. T. Hogans team.

Made Money who was reported lame after the Ashburton meeting has apparently recovered sufficiently to nominate for Wyndham.

The nominations for the Wyndham meeting total 162 as against 122 last year, an increase of 40. Handicaps will be declared on Wednesday next. Dictate has a good record over seven furlongs and he is likely to go out at a short price at Hororata tomorrow. It the track is firm, however, he will not start.

Twelve yearlings by Lord Warden will be submitted at the Trentham Sales next month. Other sires well represented are Defoe (11), Bulandshai (11), Siegfried (9), Lord Quex (9) and Beau Pere (8).

Both Cerne Abbas and Royal Chief have accomplished everything their trainer, F. D. Jones has asked of them. The manner in which the pair have kept their condition with strenuous racing says a great deal for Jones, whose ability is well known. The following riding engagements have been announced for the Woodville meeting on tomorrow: C. G. Goulsbro Beaupartier, Buster Brown, Knightsbridge, Grand City, Big Dook or Master Cyklon, Bluffer; H. N. Wiggins—Quadroon, Wildflower, Missioner; L. Duheu —Civil, Lord Willonyx. After being treated to a spell Ortyx is again back in work at Wingatui. The Lord Warden filly has had a strenuous time for one of her age but she came through her racing in game style. At Trentham when she was opposed to the Beau Pere two-year-olds she displayed as much speed as any of them but did not finish on as well as in her earlier races. There is no doubting the brilliance of Ortyx and if she trains on she has the ability to develop into a high class sprinter. The early racing she has had may or may not have an adverse effect on her later prospects. Ortyx will reappear at Wingatui during the holidays.

Gay Blonde, who won with 7.13 in lmin 11 3-ssec holds the race record in connection with the Railway Handicap. Since 1931 each winner has broken lmin 13sec. At Riccarton the Stewards’ Handicap has been won four times faster than lmin llsec. Three winners in Glentruin, Comic Song, and Grand Sport won in lmin 10 2-ssec, and Silver Streak in lmin 10 3-ssec. Silver Scorn won the Middle Park Plate in lmin 9 2-ssec when carrying 9-11. Silver Ring holds the Trentham record at lmin 9Jsec. With her Auckland Cup trip off Cuddle has been lightly blistered, as it is suspected she might be developing a splint, and it is therefore doubtful now if she will be raced over the holidays. Splints are not usually troublesome in horses over six years, though there are exceptional cases.

It is reported that The Masquerader, who won the Great Easter Handicap of 1934 has put in an appearance at Riccarton again and when the tracks become easier he will be schooled by J. Tomkinson. He has already shown some aptitude for the jumping game. Recall raced very greenly at the Ashburton meeting and it was considered that had he maintained a straight course he may have won. He will be in favour for the Trial Plate at Hororata tomorrow.

At the present time the list of licensed jockeys for the Dominion (excluding apprentice riders) numbers over 190, and only five of these horsemen can go to scale at 7.0.

The Buzzer and Oratory are two of L. G. Morris’s team who are to do their racing at Ellerslie over the holidays. B. H. Morris will ride Oratory, who ran second in the Railway Handicap last year, and H. N. Wiggins was approached over the week-end to ride The Buzzer in the Cup. Foals from the Stonyhurst Stud have been reported as follows: Fast Passage, a filly by Winning Hit; Sailor’s Love, a filly by Nightmarch; Robbie’s Mistake, a colt by Cricket Bat; Owlscombe, a colt by Magnus; Retrospect, a colt by Magnus; Wild Hind, a filly by Foxbridge; Stout Heart, a colt by Magnus; Good Sight, a filly by Nightmarch; Rivalry, a filly by Winning Hit; Disdainful, a colt by Winning Hit. Although most clubs are now using the 7.0 minimum, only two events will be decided with this minimum at the Wairarapa Racing Club’s summer meeting at the New Year. The two events

referred to are the open sprint on the first day and the open distance handicap on the second day. A 7.7 minimum will operate in the Wairarapa Cup and in both juvenile events. Catalogue 7.6 is not likely to start in the. Auckland Cup. Queen of Song 7.12 and Friesland 7.12 are doubtful, Greek Shepherd is not in work, Floodtide, Cuddle and Silver Ring have been scratched, and Wotan is remaining in Australia. Thus it is possible that Wild Chase 8.11, Argentic 8.11, Willie Win 8.10, Cerne Abbas 8.1, and Jonathan 7.10 will be the only starters carrying more than 7.4, states The Timaru Herald. A race which at one time promised to attract a big field has already lost half its glamour. Not more than half a dozen of the 33 on the minimum have any credentials for such a race, so there is likely to be a big thinning out at that end also. The starters likely to carry 8.0 or more are all from Riccarton.
