Mr and Mrs J. Inglis Wright, Dunedin, and their daughter, Miss Mary S. B. Wright are the guests of the Misses Todd, Belgravia, Waikiwi. Miss P. Sandford, of Invercargill, and Mr and Mrs C. G. Macauley, Mossburn, were among the recent guests registered at the Hermitage, Mount Cook. The engagement is announced of John Mac Gibbon, son of Mr and Mrs J. M. Shanks, Gore, and Gladys Marion, elder daughter of Mr and Mrs C. G. Holmes, Waimate. Mrs Knox Gilmer, Wellington, and Miss Gilmer left London for Bombay a fortnight ago, travelling overland to Marseilles. For the continuation of their homeward journey, via Sydney, they will connect with the Mooltan.

Miss Jean Burns, a 17-year-old Melbourne girl, recently made the first women’s parachute descent in Australia at Essendon, Victoria. She jumped from an aeroplane flying at 3200 feet, and landed in a selected field without mishap. Professor A. G. Strong, Dean of the Faculty of Home Science in the University of Otago, will make a tour of New Zealand before the opening of the university session next year to make known the scope of the School of Home Science (the only one of its kind in the Dominion), and to discuss the possibility of a more intimate relationship between the school and the community for the benefit of both. Dr Strong will be accompanied by Dr Elizabeth Gregory and Miss Violet MacMillan. TUTURAU CENTENARY CELEBRATIONS END WITH DANCE The Tuturau Centenary Committee held a successful dance in the Horticultural Hall, Mataura, as a conclusion to the celebrations. The music was supplied by Mr Ted Hunter’s orchestra. During the evening items were given by the Bluff Maori party and a number of other performers. Among those present were Mr,and Mrs J. The hostesses were Misses Grace Johnston, Mabel McKenzie and Edna Lopdell. During the afternoon songs were contributed by Miss Gwladys Williams and Miss Jenny Connelly. Competitions were won by Miss Greta Wishart and Miss Gwladys Williams. Miss Johnston wished Miss Batcheler every happiness, and the guest of honour replied. Anglem and Bragg (2), Miss Dorothy Edwards, who has resigned her position to take up Work in Gore, was the recipient of a crystal powder bowl, which was presented to her by the staff of the Borough Council last Friday evening. Miss Ruth Lopdell arrived on Tuesday from Dunedin to spend a holiday with her parents, Mr and Mrs J. W. Lopdell, Foyle street. Mrs James White, Boyne street, and her daughter, Miss Eunice White, are spending a holiday in Auckland.
