RUSSIA PREPARES TO VOTE
PROPAGANDA IN FULL BLAST POLLING DAY NEXT SUNDAY (United Press Assn—Telegraph Copyright) (Received December 9, 6.30 p.m.) LONDON, December 9. Oratory is becoming more fervid as polling day (next Sunday) in the first Soviet general elections approaches, says the Moscow correspondent of The Daily Telegraph. The entire State party machine is working at full blast. All citizens are expected to attend electoral meetings, which always develop into pro-Stalin demonstrations. About 100,000 “agitational centres” are teaching electors their rights and duties. Young members of the Communist League in Moscow are canvassing every room in every crowded tenement. It is hard work drumming such things into the heads of people who have never polled before, and 1,000,000 persons have been mobilized to undertake propaganda throughout the Soviet.
CANDIDATE ON ICE FLOE
ELECTORATE ADDRESSED BY RADIO
MOSCOW, November 23. M. Papanin, of the Soviet aerial Polar expedition, who is a candidate at the forthcoming elections, addressed his electorate by radio from an ice floe. His research station, built on floating ice, has drifted more than 400 miles from its original position in four months. . . In the Polar winter night aerial communication with the mainland is hazardous, and M. Papanin may not be able to address his constituents personally. _____
