LAWN TENNIS Since the opening of the tennis season in the middle of October, over 100 challenges have been played for positions on the men’s and women’s ladders. Recent results are as follows: D. E. Scott regained sixth position' by beating J. Henderson, 9-4, after a brilliant display: C. H. Baird beat W. Irvine (challenger), 6-3, 6-1, for third position; W. Hansen beat G. Burgess (challenger), 9-4: Miss L. Rice (challenger) beat Miss H. W. Baird, 9-4; Miss A. Bogue beat Miss C. Traynor (challenger), 7-5; Miss J. Munro (challenger) beat Miss G. Gaw, 7-1; W. Hansen beat W. L. Stewart (challenger), 9-4. Mrs E. A. Woodward (challenger) beat Mrs E. S. Macfarlane, 9-2, for eighth position on the Eastern ladder. The winner was much steadier, and Mrs Macfarlane at no stage appeared to settle down. Her backhand was weak. Challenging for fifth position on the men’s ladder, A. Strang was beaten by C. H. Baird, 6-4, 6-0. The first set was very evenly contested, but in the second Baird played brilliantly, giving his opponent no chance. His net play and overhead smashing were particularly deadly. MISSIONARY UNION The final meeting for the year of the Wyndham branch of the Presbyterian Women’s Missionary Union was held in the Sunday school hall. The president (Mrs G. D. Falconer) was chairman and there was a big attendance of members. Mrs C. S. Gordon read an article dealing with the life and work of Suddah Sundar Singh, the famous Indian missionary. ST. ANDREW’S SCOTTISH SOCIETY A meeting of the women’s committee of the Wyndham and district St. Andrew’s Scottish Society was held. Mrs D. N. A. Macpherson presided over a full attendance of members. Arrangements were made for the annual entertainment of the children of members of the society. It was decided to erect a Christmas tree and distribute suitable gifts. A concert programme by the children was arranged.
