PLAYING AREAS AT HIGH SCHOOL

REPORT TO BE SENT TO MINISTER At the monthly meeting of the Southland High Schools’ Board of Governors yesterday afternoon a sub-committee consisting of Messrs R. M. Strang, F. G. Stevenson, J. T. Carswell and W. Bell was appointed to discuss the provision of suitable playing areas for the pupils at the Girls’ High School. A comprehensive report is to be brought down, which is to be forwarded to the Minister of Education (the'Hon. P. Fraser). In her monthly report the lady principal (Miss A. Eastwood) stated that the annual swimming sports had been held on December 2, Marie Mabson being senior champion and Marion Stobo junior champion. In the Junior Lawn Tennis Association’s competitions the High School junior A team had won the junior cup. The corrugated iron fence enclosing the school grounds was in need of repair, the report said, especially in the front, where two or three sheets of iron were needed to replace those that had become rusted and broken. The combined break-up ceremony of the boys’ and girls’ schools would be held in the Civic Theatre on December 17. According to the rector of the Boys’ High School (Dr G. H. Uttley) in his monthly report to the board the roll number now stands at 275; 36 boys left during the year, either through transfer to other schools or to take employment.

The school athletic team did splendidly at Oamaru, the report said. The senior team was runner-up for the senior championship shield, and the intermediate and junior teams each won the championship shield for its competition. The senior relay team won the relay championship for the tenth year in succession. At this meeting six members of the school teqm broke records.
