ART EXHIBITION OPENED

OIL AND WATER COLOUR PAINTINGS Considerable interest is being taken by those interested in art in the exhibition of oil and water-colour paintings by Miss Charlotte Petrie, of Invercargill, which was opened in the lounge of H. and J. Smith, Ltd., yesterday afternoon by the Mayor (Mr John Miller). The majority of the paintings are for sale. The exhibition will close on December 23. In opening the exhibition Mr Miller said the public seldom had an opportunity of viewing the work of a local artist. Although he did not profess to know a great deal about art he did know something about animals and the two studies of dogs he had seen were very well done and true to life. Miss Petrie is an experienced artist, holding certificates from the Slade School, London University, where she has exhibited. While in London she was invited to exhibit at the British Women Artists’ Exhibition and also in the New Zealand section of the overseas Coronation Exhibition. She is also a member of the Otago Art Society. Nearly 100 paintings are exhibited and they cover a wide range. In the oil paintings are depicted several scenes which will be familiar to Invercargill residents. Oamaru, Christchurch, Lake Wanaka, Queenstown and the city itself have all been visited and painted with outstanding success. A painting that attracted much attention was that of the palace at Luxembourg. The water colours, delicate and attractive, appealed greatly to anyone who could appreciate light and shade and a versatile and trained touch. Most of the well-known beauty spots of the South Island have been treated sympathetically and truthfully. There are many scenes of the English countryside and glimpses of Scotland and France and even further abroad.
